Volvo 850 Turbo 850

Hello,

New to Brickboard. Interested in purchasing an 850 turbo. Wondering what other 850 owners and mechanics see as being the least roublesome year for the 850. I am looking at both Sedans and Wagons. Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

    Volvo 850 Turbo 850

1994-2000 which includes the S/V70 which was an updated 850. The most troublsome is the AC evaporator repair/replace, the entire dash must be removed to replace it at considerable cost.

I like the 95 850T because of the onboard diagnostics. Questionable mileage can be verified by asking the computer what the miles really are, only for 1994-5.

You are aware that there is maintenance to keeping a Volvo running. If you do your own, it is a very cheap car to operate. If you have to rely on a Volvo mechanic, find a different car because the hourly rate will leave a gaping hole in your pocket.
Try to find one with maintenance history, redish tranny fluid (automatic), and make sure all of the electrics work before signing for it. The timing belt gets changed every 70K miles or 6 years. The water pump is good for 180K miles. There should be zero rust, the factory galvanized all of the panels.

The 98+ models moved the window switches to the driver's door and all of the dash plastics are gray instead of black. The 1996+ came with a CD player in the dash.

You live in a snow belt, so ask if there are spare rims for snow tires.

All of the 850 turbos are essentially the same. The only 850 that differed from the others was a '93 but it was not offered with a turbo. I like '94 and '95 models since they have both OBD-II and OBD-I. The OBD-I system is great for testing the Volvo specific functions like ABS, SRS, Climate Control, etc. On the '96 and later cars those tests can only be made with a Volvo specific scan tool or Volvo specific software.

Volvo introduced SIPS on the '95 turbos but I'm not sure if it was just in the R model or if it was all turbos. '96 and on they all have SIPS.
