Squeek driving me crazy!!

Hi friends,

I developed a squeek in my 1998 S70 with 120,000 miles a few days ago that's driving me crazy! Using a stethescope I tracked it down to the front left spring or shock. When I push the fender up and down I can hear it, and when I drive, it is constantly making an irritating noise. I sprayed WD-40 everywhere I could and on all moving parts up front. I even undid the top shock mount under the hood and put lots of WD down there.....to no help. I thought it was probably from where the coil spring seats on the mount and soaked it again.

Any ideas what else I can try..or any ideas.

Thanks guys...

Use a large adjustable wrench and try turning the large bolt on the top of the strut tower, clockwise. If it turns easily, you will need a new spring seat, which means the strut has to come off.

Thanks for the help Klaus. I see you love your Volvos...I do also as this is my 5th one.
I took off the large lock nut on the top of the shock (strut) under the hood and loosened the large x shaped nut that mounts it so it would travel when I rocked the fender up and down while spraying WS under the mount, hoping it would get to where it needed to go, but it didn't help.

I've never heard of the spring seat wearing out? and if it wasn't broken wouldn't some lube get rid of the noise?

Using the stethescope it seemed that it was coming from the lower seat, which I thought would take the lube easier?

      Thanks Klaus

That star nut is all that is keeping the spring compressed! Please, don't do that again. The star nut and the very large nut are supposed to be torqued to 52lbs.
You cannot reach the spring seat with WD40. They all wear out and start turning in the fitting they are in and squeek!

Get a new spring seat for an XC90, they will fit and are more robust.

AND DON"T REMOVE THE TOP BOLTS unitl the spring is compressed!
