Radio speaker upgrade? 850 1995

Can anyone help me with upgrading or should I say replacing my OE speakers in my 1995 854 GLT? I have the two in the dashboard, one in each door and the two in the rear window deck. They are cracking and the sound is now pretty bad after 180,000 plus miles. I have an old Sony CD slim deck I want to install along with a old set of Boston Acoustic sepearate mid-range/tweeter combo. The mid-range and tweeter will mount well in the dash but as far as the rest, I am clueless. Let me know if anyone has some ideas for meas to where to buy the replacements. I don't want to see the dealer for this stuff.

Thanks much!

Okay, here we go.

I just did a complete upgrade to my 1995 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan. This upgrade required absolutely no minor or major modifications.

I will list out by location what you will need to do the job with no problems at all.

Starting with Rear Deck on the Sedan. The OEM speakers are originally 8 ohm. The direct replacements will be 4 ohm.

Wiring info that you will need to know.

Right Rear: Volvo(pink/white) is positive (use wide connector)
Volvo(pink/black) is negative (use narrow connector)

Left Rear: Volvo(brown/white) is positive (use wide connector)
Volvo(brown/black) is negative (use narrow connector)

For speakers I used Kenwood KFC-1382ie (3-ways) 160 watts max.

Volvo 850 Speaker Brackets (part # 142sav05)
5-1/4" rear deck adapter brackets for 1993 Volvo 850

Also need, Crimp-on Nylon insulated closed end connectors, part #64-3041 from Radio Shack.

Next,

All four doors.

Direct replacement speakers. I used

Kenwood KFC-1062S (3-ways) 120 watts max.

Volvo Speaker Brackets (part # 212560314)
4" or 5" adapter plates
&
Volvo Speaker Brackets (part # 264560016)
1983-up, 4" or 5" adapter plates

These speakers will be a direct connect on your Volvo.

Everything that I just gave you above I got from Crutchfield and they are OEM direct replacements for the car. My whole set up including new receiver, all hardware and speakers came to $389 shipped direct to my door.

Before you do all of that, check the original speakers. I had the magnets fall off my 1995. A little glue and all was well again. The door speakers were OK, just the dash and rear deck.

Here is how I have dealt with all three of my 854s.

Two of them have OEM head units and my son's car has an Alpine head unit.

Ozark, I forgot to ask you, what should the speakers I buy be 4 ohms or 8 ohms?
I am not a big electrical whiz so I am not sure what ohms the 850 uses in their stereo systems.

The OEM speakers are 8 Ohm, the Infinity speakers that I replaced them with were 4 Ohm. The radio(s) didn't care and they worked fine.

Ozark Lee,
Do you know the exact size of the different locations in our 850's?
For example are the door speakers 5.5" round and are the rear deck ones 6x8?
Just wondering if anyone makes an aftermarket drop in for these sizes.
I know you or someone did a modification on the rear deck to make a 5x7 fit.

OL,
Can you tell me from your experience after removing the door panels what the actual diameter is for the front and rear door speakers? Or maybe I should ask what size can be accomodated in there.

Thanks!

When my rear door speaker went out I fooled around with trying for an upgrade. Whether it's 4 or 8 ohm I don't remember (8 I think) it is the opposite of what's common and easy to find. What I bought was not better sounding than OEM and did not fit without modification. So, unless you're an audiophile and/or know which brand & model speakers sound best, I'd suggest finding second hand OEM's. It'd be the least trouble and they sound very good.
