Tailgate lock flaky 850 96

Hi all,

The tailgate lock on my 96 855 does not always lock/unlock with the central lock. All other doors work 100%. Might this be related to my battery going bad (which is the case)? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and/or fix this are much appreciated.

I would rather not remove the tailgate trim since I spent quite some time fixing the oh so familiar problem with the trim coming loose and rattling (using my homemade kit which included a lot of filing small metal washers :-). I found getting it all back together rather taxing but it's rock solid (and quiet) now.

Many thanks in advance

Johan

Re: Tailgate lock flaky 850 96

Johan: Is it possible that your lock for the station wagon 'hatch' (5th door) is set up so that if you turn the key in the tailgate all the way to the left, as in some other models/years, the tailgate WON'T open, on purpose. Earlier models had that ability, perhaps to discourage someone from breaking into the car from a front door, thus popping all of the locks (including the tailgate), and having the tailgate open, for access to whatever it was that they wanted to steal; or, less insidiously, to prevent anyone riding in the back of the wagon from accidentally opening the car from the inside when the car was in motion?--PD.
