Hard Steering questions. 850 1994

Hey there in Volvo Land.
I have a 1994 850. Just recently I have had a little trouble with my power steering. The problem is pretty simple, the car steers fine within the first two to three inches of movement (like 85% of driving), anything over that and its really hard to turn. At first checked the fluid, perfect no loss. Then today I replaced 12oz. of PS fluid with Lucas Power steering miracle juice and nothing has changed. The pump is pumping. So I am here to find out just what the cause is. Is it a bushing? ball joint? Steering shaft CV? Should I just grease everything up? and hope for the best?
Also; I just changed all four of my tires.

Thank you in advance,

I think after 15 years of use, the seals and inner tie rods just plain wear out. You can get a re-built rack for 265.00 (alloemparts.com).....i'm guessing that it would take a mechanic about 3 hours to install one, so it's about a 600.00 repair.......

My steering does the same thing sometimes, but it's intermittent....it's strange.

    One more thing,
is it possible that the serpentine belt needs to be tightened up a bit?

Did this start right after the new tires were installed? The serpentine belt has an automatic tenshioner and can't be adjusted. Only replaced. I suspect if the belt was loose it would squeel when you turned the wheels. Unless, of course, the people in the shop put some oil on it to make it slip?? Do they do general repairs too? Sorry to be so suspicious but my son's girl friend just went throught hell and $550 dollars of repairs after taking her Passat in for some "routine" recall work. Try a new belt and clean up all the pulleys and rollers.

I do all the repairs myself (way more satisfying get to learn a lot and no one can rip me off :), Tires included. Belt squeals at lock on both sides. Just went under and over all of the steering and cleaned oiled and greased everything steering related, including the knuckle. If that does not work then I will probably change the belt again. I just changed the alternator in this about 2 months ago and never put a new belt on it. Belt does not seem loose but its worth a shot. I knew the tension was automatic I just thought maybe there was a way to firm it up a bit.

Belt should NOT squeal at full lock on either side or at any other time.

You may hear a squeal, but it should not be the belt.

Some pumps have a bypass valve for high-pressure conditions (I do not know if the Volvo pump has one) and that noise would be the bypass valve relieving.

Or, if the pump does not have a bypass valve, the PUMP will make a squeal, but that noise is completely normal.

What is NOT normal is if the belt is making the noise.

I had the same problem and fixed it: Lift the hood and spray W40 on the joints of the steering shaft and that was all, no more problem.
