STEERING WHEEL/COLUMN NOISE V70-XC70 98

Has anyone else experienced a noise coming from the steering column while turning the wheel? The sound is a low toned squeel or hoot for lack of better words. Almost as if something is rubbing or binding. It does not appear to be coming from under the hood. It is much lower in tone than squeeling belts. It does occur more often during colder temperatures.

Yep, mine did this when new. There is a rubber seal around

the steering column that resonates. If you want to see

exactly where sound comes from, start the car then sit on

your knees outside the car and turn the wheel. Looking at

the steering column you can see and hear where it comes from.

Put some grease between the rubber seal and column to fix.

(I did this 4 years ago and did not have to do it since -- the

spray stuff would work too but maybe not as long).

The steering linkage was re-designed for the 70 series.

    The 850s don't do this.

I had that problem, especially on cold days. I just had it looked at by Volvo service, they lubricated column bushing, charged me $18.40 Cdn for labour.

Your complaint brings 2 thins to mind. During cold weather the rubber boot on the fire wall that the steering colum passes through makes a squeeking noise, we just spray silicone on the boot. That takes care of that problem. Another thing is the colmn itself making the noise. There's a tech note on it and some special greese, you should be able to get both from a dealer. It's a pretty simple thing, lube the wheel and turn it 10 times one way and 10 the other.

There was a previous posting here (about a month ago) that confirms what JT says. I also had this problem and solved it by squirting some lube at the bottom of the steering column shaft. Now my wife is the only thing that squeals when I drive.

I like the wife part. Same in here. Will you try to lube her with some X'mas gifts ? PChiu
