I'm confused! (Again) I have a '99 NA V70 with the 4 speed auto trans with the D-3 selector. I lost my manual (It's around here somewhere.) but have an on line version. As follows, the on-line manual recommends Dexron III or Mercon for the trans and ATF for the power steering. This tells me I can get a good quality Dex III and top off or flush and fill both.

Manual
Automatic transmission fluid: ATF Dexron IIE/ III and Mercon
Power steering fluid: ATF

Yet I've seen posts here that say this incorrect. I've read that 3309 is the best for 4 or 5 speed auto, and synthetic fluid is necessary for the other. But they are not interchangeable. There's something about the friction and impact force or some such gibberish. So which is the correct fluid for my '99 4 speed auto?

And do I use the same in my power steering pump or do I get a good synthetic PS fluid.

    Hi,
    I have 2x850-94s 4aut in which been using DexIID without problems. last summer I flushed the one with Mobil1 syn and can say (in winter) it is smoother but for us quite much more expensive. Still considering which to use with the other one next time.

    All of that gibberish is for 5 speed autoboxes. Your 4 speed AT would really like Mobil1 ATF, NOT 3309. Good old cheap DEX/MER will also work just find, but it dowsn't last as long as synthetic.

    You could use the ATF in your PS fluid, but for 1 quart why not use synthetic PS fluid made for PS systems?

    I have sometimes gotten good answers from the parts guys at the dealerships. You could make a couple calls and give that a try.
