Quality Question xc90

Hi all just a quick question for the guru's out there. I am looking at the xc90 and would love to hear opinions from real owners not the sales guy :) I know typical buying 123's, maint records, etc etc...I have used this board for many years and never been let down not to mention the money I have saved,,,GREAT board! Right now we are leaning toward something in the 2005 year model but I want to know if there are any trouble years, engines better than others,,,etc etc....Thanks in advance!

Stay away from the T6 engines, the twin turbos generate too much heat for the engine compartment and are trouble prone. The 3.2L is better but gas consumption is higher. Lots of gremlins if the car was made on Monday or Friday.
The XC70 has more storage room and still seats 4 comfortably, with the 5 cyl turbo, it get gets good mileage.
Did you look at any BMW X5s with the 3.0L engine???

I dont know much about the bmw's at all. Is the X5 a reliable auto? Is it fairly easy to maintain for a typical wrench head? I have somewhat of a confidence level maintaining a volvo especially with the resources you provide on this board, your advice is priceless!

Visit your local dealer and take a test drive in the XC90 and the X5 over the same roads if you can. BMWs 3L engine is really good and the handling is light.
The X5 is probably going to cost more and after 100K miles, the rattles start coming out. The BMW mechanicals are a bit harder to maintain than Volvo and I wouldn't expect it to go 200K miles with out a head job.
The 5 cyl XC90 is also just a 5 seater, if you can find them. The XC70 can haul more than the XC90 and still gets better mileage.

Thanks! There is quite a difference between the 2 but before I make a move on it I am going to drive a MB 420 and a 500 tomorrow. I forgot to mention my better half needs towing, warmblood sport horse. What do you think of the petrol MB V8's? I would love to go CDI just hard to justify the cost for a weekend vehicle.

          Again thanks for your input!

I have a MB GL320 CDI with a 7500lb tow capacity. The car weighs 6,000lbs! But I get 25mpg on the highway and about 22mpg around local roads. The torque of 398 lb ft is astonishing. There are a few minor bugs with my new toy, but all covered under warranty. You are right about the price, but it drives like a car.

              Quality Question xc90

im jealous! I would love to have one in diesel but being an occasional driver it would be money wasted. I just changed the tie rods on my 850 and I am going to drop it off for an alignment while I drive a couple of ML's...gas engines "sigh" lol

The reviews are mixed on the gas engines like any other car but I havent read too much on the big stuff having problems like engines and tranny's etc. Appears to mostly be electronic related or check engine lights that were resolved. I have a 2003 land rover discovery right now thats going on ebay soon so really any suv that starts will be an improvement! :)

              Warmest regards
