New Addition 850 1997

'97 850 Sedan 170K

I picked it up "sight-on-seen" last night for 1500. Nice car very well kept.

Some know issues that I need help running to the ground:

1- Check Engine Light is on. I plan on going to the local auto parts store and first reading the code(s) and then reseting and see what happens. Where is the connector?

2- The Heat when the car is first started smells immediatly like exhaust

3- Then after it warms up it smell like coolant or dirty pvc system

4- The Electronic Temperature Selector does not change the direction of air flow except if it is placed on defrost. Then most of the air flow appears to flow from the defrost. But in all other postions it seem split between them all.

5- The heater fan when running on low rpm sounds like a squeaky squirrel cage

6- I only got one key and no FOB. Is their an "AutoStart" available that will also control the Locks? Otherwise if I opt to go with an AutoStart, I wind up with two FOB's on the keychain....

    RT,

Is the car a base or GLT model?

        RT,

Is this your first Volvo? I don't know if you are aware of the fact, but the '97 GLT you just acquired has the light-pressure turbo engine. This is a car that needs a very (and I mean very) strict maintenance schedule if you want it to last another 100k miles. Because it is a turbo, the car will have more moving parts that require constant attention. Turbochargers in particular last at least 150k-175k miles before they need replacing or rebuilding. Also, the extra power will take a toll on the transmission, so make sure to have it flushed every 25k-30k miles with good synthetic fluid.

Nice catch Juan. I actually "Assumed" it was non-turbo" like my '95 850 "Parts" car..... OOOPS

Well other then the Turbo portion, is the Basic Engine and Tranny the same? How about other bolt on items; hoses, belts, cap, rotor, wires, etc are they the same from the '95 non-turbo to the '97 turbo?

          Thanks

          Kevin
