THe usual cause: ice build-up on the headlights freezes the blade arm into position and starting the windshield spray/wipe sequence.

Anyway, I haven't seen any after-market blades around and am seriously considering the removal of the arms from the shaft since it looks to be about $1000Cdn for the repair job with no guarantee that the motor is working or more parts aren't needed.

My opinion: this is the most teats-on-a-bull feature I've seen on Volvos and not worth the effort; so I'd like to pull the arms.

Any suggestions or alternate ways of verifying how dead the motor or electronics is?

    I buy a single wiper blade at the autoparts store and cut it up to make 2 little blades :)

    To verify the motor working, turn on car and headlights (DRLs don't count), pull wiper stalk to wash windows and watch for the arms to move over the hood.

    If the arms don't move, don't get them fixed.

      The arms do move over time (multiple engine starts over multiple days).

      Any links to actually how you remove the wiper arm from the motor spindle?

        Try spraying some PB Blaster, penetrating oil, as far back on the spindle as you can. That might free it up.

        The cover over the spindle pops off revealing a screw.
