Shifter problem - trouble with mechanical lock

I started having trouble getting out of and into park on my 1996 855R.

I checked the switch on the brake pedal and the solenoid is working properly.

The problem is in the actual mechanism that controls the lever's movement in its quadrant.

I can see the solenoid operate properly. but the button on the shift lever does not push the rod inside the shift lever down far enough to release the lock.

I can push the metal tab down a bit more than the shift lever button does, and get out of park easily.

To me, it seems like there is a problem with the rod inside the shift lever, but this seems very unlikely.

Anyone have any experience with this problem?

Shifter problem - trouble with mechanical lock

    James:
Type "shift lever lock" into the search box at the top of the page. You'll get two pages of postings, mostly on your problem, including a post by "Aye Roll" which has a diagram of the shifter quadrant (not necessarily your model, of course). The detail's not the best, but perhaps it'll give you an idea of the setup. By the way, there's one entry in the search result which suggests that the best approach is to remove the entire quadrant from the hump, and take it to the bench. As it looks (from the diagram)like the required adjustment is near the bottom of the stack, you may be reduced to this action. Try a few variations on the search subject I suggested, and also try Google, as it reaches out well beyond the common scope of our forums.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
    Garth

Shifter problem - trouble with mechanical lock ---- DOH! I figured it out!

Garth - Thanks for your help.

Since damaging the internal rod seemed unlikely, I tried to figure the problem out.

I have seen several posts about removing the shift lever and saw that it is just pressed on. Guess what - All I had to do was to give it a couple of good whacks on the top to force it down a bit.

Evidently, yearS of pushing on the button on the shift lever caused the lever to come up a bit, making the rod inside the shift lever too short. Then I had problemS getting out and into park!
