Check engine light on again help! 850

I have a 95 850 GLT. I have had extensive work done on it at Volvo dealer:
They said a piston was miss firing so I had this done:
new distributor cap ,new wires, sparkplugs, tune up done, $400, that fixed the problem. Now 2000 miles later the light is on again. It came on before after a long trip, but went off shortly after. I just gotback from a long trip, and the cel came on again, and it is still on. I take car of my car, but do not want to take it back to dealer(I am a poor college student),sd any advice?
Thanks Nathan7

    Hi,

To type the code, it's sort of like tapping out the Morse Code with the button.

I was able to reset the service light on my '95 GLT with the following instructions, which I found on the internet (it might have been on Matthew's Volvo site):

To Reset Volvo 850 service light

There are two diagnostic units(it says A and B on the cover) located adjacent to washer reservoir under the hood.

    1. Turn on the ignition and open the module A and insert the flylead into socket number 7
    2. Press the button on the diagnostic unit 4 times, briefly but firmly.

Then the LED illuminates and stays illuminated, and the system is ready to accept manual code input. A code number for resetting the service reminder light is 1-5-1.

    3. To do this, press the test button once and release it. And LED illuminates again.
    4. Then press 5 times and wait for the LED to illuminate.
    5. Press the button once and LED should flashes several times in succession and the reminder should have been reset.
    6. Switch off the ignition and replace the flylead in its holder and close the cover.

Thanks. I reset the cel, found the code. That is great that th 95 850s have this diagnostic system under the hood. I was worried that a piston was misfiring again, that was the case before. These are amazing cars that we have.

Take care of your 1995 850. They are good cars and deserve good care. Check and clear all of the codes every time you change oil. Read the posts for 850 and learn what potential problems exist and if it is easy to fix them.
And have fun driving it, but watch out for the police :)

Advice: check the codes with the LED/switch interface under the hood 850 1995

The '95 is the last year that you can read the codes yourself (I miss this feature now that I have a '98). You can find the definition of the DTC codes online. Read them out (read until you get the same code twice to make sure you got them all) and post back with the results.

No scanner needed. Details are here:

Have a pen and paper handy and then post the code numbers back.

read the codes. delete them all and the ones that return can usually lead you to the problem.

    good luck!
