Hot Battery 850

Hi All,

I have an 94 850 with 170K thats fairly new to me (1 week)
I noticed a burning smell and its coming from
the Battery. I also noticed a slight seepage of acid
coming from the top of the battery. The cables seem fine
...... but the battery is very hot to touch.

I did have the battery out yesterday when dealing with a
headlight washer moter that woulndt turn off.
I removed the wiper moter.
Cables are hooked up correctly.
Any thoughts.

Thanks

Mike

Take the battery to the nearest chain auto parts store and have them test it. They will do it for free and then they will gladly sell you a new battery. The best test is done on the machine with the battery out of the car.

It sounds like you have a shorted cell in the battery but the test will tell for sure.

      Hot Battery 2 850

      OZ,

since the posting I was able to find my multimeter.

Im getting 17-18 volts between the battery posts.

I did switch the battery with another one. Same test results.

I'm guessing its overcharging. Do the 850's have an external regulater

or do I need to swap out the alternator. If this was my 240......

this job would be done. I'm reel green on the 850's.

      Mike

Nice catch, I was going to suggest you need a new regulator. It is supposed to put out around 14.5V. Don't be anywhere near that battery if it gets hot, it can explode. Wear safety glasses and keep a garden hose handy, to wash you first and everything else second.

IIRC the regulator does come off with the brushes.
