00 V70xc ETS light and P0422 code V70-XC70 2000

I just bought a 2000 V70 XC with 104K. Test drove it hard, drove great. One day later the ETS light comes on, several days later it goes off. Then my Check Engine light came on, then went off. Now both lights are on. I ran a tank of regular gas through it, but now I am using premium92.

Autozone checked the codes and pulled P0422, catalyst efficiency low bank 1.
Car drives great, no hesitation, no stalling, full power.

Question is could I have tripped this P0422 code by using regular 85 octane gas for about 200 miles? I would venture to say that my cat is not defective. I will check for the vacuum leaks as suggested.

Second question I am not sure why the ETS light came on and would it be triggered by the P0422 code?

From reading former threads it sounds like if the ETS light goes on I better run for the dealer and pay the 1000 bucks it costs for the repair. It also sounds like if I need a new cat that it will cost another 1000 to 1400 bucks. I need a timing belt change too!!

I don't think I want this car anymore, and I have owned it for 2 weeks.

Does anyone know if those ETS modules are under warranty now?

Thanks
Chad

The ETS is under warranty for 10 years and 200K miles. The ETS light must be on when you go to the dealer or he will find something else wrong! They do not like to replace ETSs. But, be satisfied with a reprogram and cleaning if it is free.

You need at least 89 octane for normal driving, 92-93 octane for high rpm, greater than 5000rpm. The knock sensors will retard timing and pour too much gas through the injectors. This could have an effect on the 2 cat sensors. I suggest, if the P0422 code comes back, to pull the sensors, clean them with carb cleaner, and put them back before buying new ones.

The XC is a nice car, but do check the spark plugs and make sure they are not fouled. Use Volvo plugs, they work best even though they are more expensive. You didn't buy a race car, you bought a car that will take you 100K miles through all kinds of weather + haul more than you will ever need.

Well I got in the car today and found neither the check engine light or the ETS light came on. I drove about 120 miles with multiple stops and still no lights. The weather did change from 102 for the past week to about 65 and raining, not sure if that would have an effect. Anyway I will bring it to the dealer to check on the ETS situation as it sounds like it should not be ignored.

thanks for the advice on the warranty!!! I will be getting all new plugs and wires, volvo branded and clean those O2 sensors for sure.

Yes no racing for me, just reliably get me to the mountain and back is all I ask of my car.

      Thanks for the advice!

Both, the ETS and ABS are temperature sensitive. Remember, bringing it in without a CEL/ETS light will cost you money, the Volvo people will not find a code in error. If the dealer is good, they will download new software for the ETS to correct original faults with the system.

Do not get the ABS module replaced, get it repaired by Victor. The ETS module cannot be repaired.
