Before getting elbow-deep in brake dust...what is the best way to snug up the shield behind the rear brake rotors? Is it just attached by bolts accessible with the rotor off, or will this be more involved?
During a recent trip, an intermittent metallic clicking started at the rear of the car. It was not related to engine speed, wheel speed, or throttle position. Turning did not make the noise more or less severe. The noise was happened at first only on bumpy roads (read as "dirt roads that could use a good grading"). After a few days the clicking would also occur with back-to-front weight transfer, while letting off the gas or at a dip in the road. The clicking would be quieter after the car was warm, but still noticeable.
The archive here (or maybe it was VSpeed) had a posting about loose dust shields causing a similar noise. Since I hadn't found anything out of place with the bushings, suspension, or exhaust...this seemed like a good thing to check. Sure enough, the shield on the driver's side would rattle when pushed. A test drive with an electrical tape cushion was click-free. Hopefully this is the cause of the noise. Now if only it can be tightened...
