Carfax and cost of repair for '97 850 vs '99 S70 850

Hi,

I am looking for a 96 or 97 850T but it will be nice to get a smoother ride with power. I have read quite a bit that the ETM/ETS (electronic throttle module) can give problem in '99 to '01. But S70 has a smoother ride compare to '96/97 850.

I have a seller who got the car from a dealer and has no history. He does not know if the ETM is under a 200k miles warranty. Is it by default warranted by Volvo for the year '99 to '01?

For DIY, are S70 much different than the 850s (I have a 93 850)? What are the horse power on S70 (all the type available)? How much are repair difference. I looked in repairpal.com and for a weel brearing job the cost for a '97 850 is around $400 where as '99 S70 is around $550. That is quite a bit difference.

Can anyone run a car fax on the following VIN. My e-mail is ronjonbarua at juno.

Thanks.

    Thanks Klaus and Don 850

    Klaus,

The ride is same? I need to drive this thing. The person has too many cars and need to get rid of this. I do not think he wants to do any work. The S80 looks quite different, is it much different servicing?

    Don,

'not sure how the tranmission helps smoother ride but I will test this machine.

I think by "ride" Klaus is referring to the platform/suspension. The transmission was made adaptive in '98. I can't say exactly what the difference is, but I'll know sometime after Saturday when I pick up my "new" '98 S70.

My '95 tranny was a little "clunky". I would say the way it shifted wasn't as smooth as it could have been. I am hoping for better. I have only driven two S70 turbos about 10 miles, but they did seem smoother (shifting).

      Don

        Don,

Is it to different servicing '93 or '95 compare to the '99 S70?

Regarding smooth ride, I am not much concern about how it shift gear but over ride on the car. I do not have a good back, so need a comfy car with durability and power.

        Thanks for the info.

Don't bother with the early S80s. They were a failed testbed for Volvo electronics.

      850 = S/V70

The ETM warrenty is good for 200K miles AND/OR 10 years, which ever comes first. And guess what, next year is 10 years for the 1999.

The S/V70 is the model designation, rebadge, of the 850. Same engine, same seats, better window switch placements, worse door panel glue, more electronics to fail, same "ride" as the 850s, better AC if the cabin filter gets replaced.

The seller sounds honest, why not ask him to get a CARFAX? That way he can share it with all potential customers. Most brokers can afford to get a years worth of carfax for the cars they sell. Remember, CARFAX does not cover all states and might be misleading. People who have accidents and fix it them selves will not be known to carfax or any other electronic system.

You're right - somewhere around '98 the transmission was improved and gives a smoother ride. The ETM module '99 to '01(some models in '02) has a defect in design/materials, BUT people report that the Volvo software fix that filters the ETM signal works great. So well that you shouldn't consider it an issue. Volvo will fix that up until 200,000 miles. I have to admit it made me reluctant to buy those years, but the consensus is that the fix works.

The horsepower is the same across the years you menitoned.

For DIY, I think you should just buy the car you want - you save the cost on labor, and if some of the parts cost a little more, it doesn't really matter. You have the ride that you want.

    Enjoy, Don
