Do 240s and 850s have this in common? 850 1995

Greetings,

I've an 85 244 and a 95 855 - both non-turbo. Consensus on the 240 site was to just toss the air box stat when (not if) it failed and secure the cool air flap open and the hot air flap closed so the AMM wouldn't fry. I did this on the 244.

I checked my 855's air box yesterday and its stat had failed so the box was receiving only hot air via the duct work from the exhaust manifold. The AMM fortunately hadn't been fried yet. I remedied that by holding the cool air flap open against the box and securing it with a bolt/nut. With the cool flap open the hot flap on the other end has to close.

Q. Why were these systems made to fail in the hot air only mode?
Q. Have others with 850s found their stats have failed? What was your fix?

Stay cool,
Dukester

You would have thought that Volvo fired the designer, but they probably promoted him to the 850 design team!! Think of all the money Volvo has made fixing that problem.
Probably the same designer that placed the heater fan for the 240 and the evaporator for the 850/0 series.

Your fix for the 240 is the same for the 850.

>>Q. Why were these systems made to fail in the hot air only mode? <<

That is a very good question, I'm going to guess that it was cheaper to build it that way.

>>Q. Have others with 850s found their stats have failed? What was your fix?<<

Both of my N/A 850s have failed airbox thermostats and on both of them I permanently forced them to the cold air side by jamming a couple of yellow Scotchlock wire nuts in the space behind the actuator. The Turbo doesn't have one.
