Hi All:

My brother borrowed my old 1994 Volvo to take a short 160 mile trip today and when he got home and took the key out of the ignition, everything shut off but the fan. he moved the switch from 0 to 4 but it just stayed running. Could this be the ignition switch or perhaps fan relay? Maybe the 0 to 4 slider thing shorted out. I just don't understand why it doesn't go out off the the key out.

    Hi all:

    Well when I got my car back, brother said smoke was coming from behind the glove box, so I pulled out the glove box and relay number 9130270 (blue) was burnt up and the green plastic holder was melted. when the plastic cooled, the fan stopped working, so it had been shorted. So, the blower motor drew too much current, and for some reason, no fuse blew. Fan only works 1-3 speeds now, but shuts off with the key as it should. Getting new relay and holder (34.00) from the dealer and if 4 fan still doesn't work, getting new resistor pack. Glad the car didn't burn to the ground. Thanks for all your input.

      If it works on speeds 1-3 the blower resistor pack is fine. After you replace the relay be sure to put fuse #5 back in or speed #4 won't work.

    My vote is for the max fan relay. For some reason the max fan power is not switched through the key. Pull fuse 5 to get it to shut off or it will kill your battery.

    Most likely the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Check to see if the window switches also work, they are on a different fuse but also work when the key is in pos I.
    EDIT: pos 0 for the fan should turn it off at all times.
