Question on the turbo S40-V40 2004

Hi all,

Yesterday had a good run on my newly acquired V40. I've never had a turbo volvo before but can anyone enlighten me when does the turbo actually kick in? Can one actually feel the turbo coming in?

I went up to speeds of 130km/h but never able to reach 3000rpm (the 5speed tranny with the torque converter keeps this down I guess). And up to those speed, the increase in power was gradual and smooth. I've heard of turbo lag, does this engine suffers from one?

Thanks all!

Question on the turbo S40-V40 2004

The 5 cylinder high pressure turbo in the 850/70 series cars doesn't get much boost until over 3500 rpm. The low pressure turbos kick in much lower, but does not generate a lot of noticable power.
I assume you have a low pressure turbo, so the engine will not have a lot of additional torque when the turbo kicks in.
You will need to hold the transmission in 2 or 3 and give it a lot of gas at 1500 rpm and "feel" the torque at 3500+ rpm. But a low pressure turbo is merely an assist and will not do a lot of boosting.
