Anyone have any experience changing a fuel pump on one of these? Shop wants $1500.
Book says 8 hrs labor. Anyone ever tackle one of these????

My 97 AWD needs a new fuel sender unit that I belive is integeral with the fuel pump. on my car I definitly have to drop the tank to do this.

This means I must remove the 'prop' shaft somtimes known as a 'drive' shaft in the USA although VOLVO NA. use the terms 'prop' shaft and 'propeller shaft', thats life.

It also means disturbing quite a bit of rusty fuel pipe work, that is probably best replaced if you live in a rust zone as I most certainly do.

It will not be a nice job even though I have a 4 poster.

It is a little time consuming, but not $1500 worth. There is a write up on Volvospeed.com
There is an access hatch in the rear floorboard. The filter is disconnected there and removed from below. No need to drop the tank, etc.

I'm told that on the 98 XC they didn't put the hatch in. They say you have to pull the drive shafts etc, and pull the tank out.
Sounds like Volvo blew it.

Sorry, I had filter on the brain because I just changed mine out.

PUMP!! That requires lowering of everything and is very costly. NOT a DIY job.

In fairness, although it is a bit of a 'bar steward' of a job, provided that the viscous coupling housing is removed' it looks as if it will come clear without moving any of the diff housing or suspension bits & pieces. Well----Thats if I find out how to remove the filler neck!!

I 'FEEL' that the pipe work and clips represents an 'iceberg' of a job. I think that the use of that green plastic coated self destructing fuel pipe is terrible, and I dont understand why more postings on all the forums dont reflect that! I have bought a coil of copper pipe and several doz. stainless hose clips and a pipe bender' and I will change the lot.

I would put It on the ramp to give it 'a coat of looking at' to help this posting, but my Land Rover Defender is, and has been for four weeks, blocking it up, waiting for an OEM radiator cum oil cooler cum intercooler discovered to be rotten in its framework, When I changed its timing belt. I thought it might be made out of recycled Volvo fuel pipes it was so bad! Main agent says no hope for another week, not their fault:-'at least its British'.

On my 1998 R with awd, there is a cover panel above the filter. Take a look at your fuel filter, it is on the passenger side above the rear axle, from behind the rear wheel. If there is a cover plate above it, then the rear flooring comes out and the panel is then exposed.

Otherwise, it is one hell of a job for an $18 part.

The fuel FILTER on model year 98 AWD is accessed thru a hatch in the floor. The fuel PUMP requires lowering of the complete rear suspension assembly along with the fuel tank to gain access to the pump/level sender assy. Is the $1500.00 estimate for parts and labor?

otherwise it`s just like you say, you need to remove rearaxel and gastank to get to it.
