Brake Failure-Complete loss of pedal-Pittsburgh 850

My well maintained 1996 850 lost all pedal last night we are lucky to be alive!
It happened on a flat road as I was coasting to a stop. If any of you are familure with Pittsburgh, it is mostly steep grades and any other location would have been a disaster. Total and complete loss of brakes, pedal went straight to the floor!! even after a couple of panic pumps it hardly would stop.
It seems to be from under the master cylinder area, as AAA tow truck was putting it up I was able to see that it was not leaking from a wheel, that it is comming from under the hood. I am away from home and only repair may be volvo dealership $$. Has anyone else had this happen? We recently switched to 850 from RWD, I can't belive this could happen to a rust free well maintained volvo. I guess it was not my time to go, this could have been really bad.
It was like something that would happen in my 122, not a modern car.

I wish I had seen this post earlier. I would have sent you over to my mechanic (Volvo Tech) in Pittsburgh. He's about 3 miles from the dealer in Pittsburgh. So far in the last two weeks he has had 4 cars towed from the dealer to him because of their cost to repair. He would have done it for around 1/2 the dealers cost.

Word for word the same happened to me yesterday in large parking lot. I went to the emergency brake and tried to pump up some pedal. When it went to the floor board I got a little, all be it loud chatter similar to when anti-locking brakes kicks in. I to was lucky since I was in a mostly empty parking lot and the emergency brake stopped me. When I took a good look I found both of my CV boots are ruptured. They are only a year old. With all the grease slung about I can't tell if a hose of perhaps a seal blew out. I will look around the master cylinder tomorrow.
    I will update.

My fix went pretty smoothly. I replaced the master cylinder with a new tank. Cost was $297 which included the $38 core charge. I bought a one man vacuum pump (bleeder) for $26. It took 2 1/2 hours which included bench bleeding the master. I like this kind of, challenge so it was fun.

I had some trouble with vendors. The first one listed it at $195.00 and took my money. After 6 days they said the went to the maufactor for new stock and it would now cost me $660. I got a refund. Next site had it for $75 with free shipping, 2 with in stock. Paid with paypal. They sent me a refund a saying they could no longer sell them because they had go up on price.

As for the roll over bar and cv boots, they are on order. $200 for each axle.

If my posting is worng in anyway let me know and I will comply.

Read that dealers bill very carefully. The brake lines should have been $18.50, not $185!!

        Stainless are $20.

Thats true, Total bill was over 200.00 for just one hose replaced. I just am away from home and was at their mercy. i ordered all new from FCP as well as rotors and pads. My Mechanic quoted .7 hours for first side and .5 for second side, this dealer charged 1.5 for just one . So as soon as i get home i will be having whole system re built. Normaly i would do it my self but my back says no way. 19.00 charge for a pint of brake fluid alone, makes ya sick, and gives Volvo a bad name.
          Parts 68.33
          labor 127.50
total 209.54 for one hose replaced-hi way robery!

Ok-Volvo tells me it was the rubber flex hose to the wheel that broke...WOW!
(185.00 each side to replace..double WOW)
Is this not the reason the 240 has the duel brake lines? Seems like a bad excuse to loose all brake presure, should there not have been some pedal?
(which i did if like the situation was), how ever if i would have been on a downgrade it would have been E- brake time for sure.
A word to the wise with single line brakes/850...check your brake hoses!!!

Brake Failure- which hoses broke? What costs $185? 850

You wrote, "Ok-Volvo tells me it was the rubber flex hose to the wheel that broke...WOW! (185.00 each side to replace..double WOW)." Do you mean the rubber brake lines that are about 1+ ft long? These are inexpensive items. I told my mechanic to replace them when he replaced rotors and pads on my wife's V70 (at about 60,000 miles). I recall the brake lines were only $20 or so each, a trivial expense for extra safety when doing a brake overhaul. So what does the $185 cover that the dealer quoted you?

Anyway, replacing brake hoses on a regular schedule should be listed in the owners' manual. For most cars, they are cheap items and it is poor economy to not change them out.

Looks like you had a sudden major leak develope somewhere. Can't really comment until you can check things out more thoroughly. Could be a worn or broken tubing or fitting. Not a very common 850 failure at all!! You were very lucky indeed.

It is a volvo dealer here in PGH now and I will report back their findings. My mechanic in Grand Rapids,Mi (my home)tells me not a common failure. He has also recently made the switch to the Wrong wheel drive (FWD) 850 series. I would think this would be a major cause of concern for any 850 owner as well as Volvo.
My 850 has just under 100k and has been dealer maintained, i had no indication of failure, brakes were in good shape and had been recently (w/in one year) serviced with new rotors and pads front/rear by dealer. The leak was massive to the ground and from left side under master, but no sign of leakage from the master.
      Stay tuned!

There is a brake junction block underneath the master cylinder that will leak from time to time. I probably do a couple a year. Deal is though that they leak very slowly, not gushers. For yours to just gush all of the fluid out of it like that is really unusual.

I could see my front hoses begining to deteriorate last year and I replaced them then..especially on a 13yr old car, it is a good preventative maintenance measure.

I agree, should be replaced as a maitenance item, however i just bought the car and figured the dealer who has done all maintenance on this car would have repaced anything during the brake job done last year if they were that rotted out;Same dealer who I took it to for this repair.
I have not had time to inspect every aspect of this car, that's why i bought one with complete service records. The gentalman i purchased the car from took very good care of it, anything suggested to need replacing,he replaced it. Mainteance records for this car looked like the new york city phone book. Also PA autos are subject to anual inspections.
Volvo dealer charged 68.00 for one rubber hose, total bill for replacing one side was 209.54!! @ %^&$#!! FCP has stainless for 20.00, 8.00 for rubber.
My ASE certified master mechanic told me parts and labor would be 68.00-70.00 according to his book.
Most failures i have experienced with brake hose has been internal, causing the calipers to stick closed, not bursting. If it was same duel system as a 240 this would not be a life and death issue. Oh well at least I am alive for now.
