disappearing coolant 850

1994 w/242,000 miles on odomenter.

The coolant keeps disppearing way too fast. My mechanic says he can't see a leak and to watch it. I am now riding around with a gallon of water to be on the safe side. Meanwhile, a friend suggested my wate pump may be on the way out. I replaced radiator in January and fuel pump about 2 weeks ago.

Any idea what could be happening? I am tryng to hold on to this car for another year or 250,000.

When the water pump goes, it will start to make noise, or coolant will begin leaking, or both. Just check by the front passenger side wheel for any drips.

If the water pump goes bad, it can throw off the timing belt. Have you ever had the pump replaced, like in conjunction with the timing belt replacement? Most Volvo water pumps are good for 180-200K miles, or more.

Also check for leaks by the heater core. See if the carpet is wet. The coolant always flows through the heater core, even if the heat is turned off.

I replaced the waterpump about three years ago, along with the timing belt and put in another engine. At the time, I has 184,000 on the odometor. The new engine has 93,000 miles on it.

For starters check your overflow tank cap. Is it gray? Is it cracked? If it is gray then chances are it is cracked.

The gray caps all fail and they tend to leak coolant. My local stealership charged me around $38.00 for the new blue/green cap but you can get one from FCP Groton for $5.00 + shipping.

Another popular place for a leak is the plastic nipple on the overflow tank where the hose from the top of the thermostat housing goes. It tends to crack and seep coolant.

Lastly - and hopefully not your case - let the car warm up and look at the exhaust. Do you have white smoke at the exhaust pipe?

If you do have white smoke it doesn't mean a new Pope, it means you likely have a blown head gasket.
