While you're at it, you may as well replace the upper and lower radiator hoses, especially if they are original. They aren't that expensive and you'll be detaching one end anyway. I reused the old hose clamps and haven't had any trouble - some people advocate using new clamps. Refer to my previous posts in this thread regarding reusing the old metal clips and the two bushings with metal sleeves for attaching the radiator.

Some people also advocate replacing the thermostat at the same time. I didn't happen to do that myself. It's right there out in the open and easy to get to if it fails later, that was my reasoning. But the same logic used for replacing the hoses could apply to the thermostat as well.

There are many posts about whether to use the Volvo coolant. It is expensive. I chose to use the Prestone "mix with any color" coolant, but I think I'll use the Volvo coolant next time I change the coolant.

Eeuroparts was lower cost for the same part when I got one for my S70. Check em both out.

I've bought Nissens from them for 240's. They were all metal and good quality. If they sell Nissens for an 850 I'd feel completely confident. Replace your hoses at the same time.

I have installed one in a 94 850. Good fit, but did have a bit of problem with one of the oil cooler hose fittings. No leaks and doing well.

It's probably 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. I seem to recall that the shipping was free at eeuroparts. I think when my whole order was factored in, they were cheaper. Lots of folks have used both sources with satisfaction and they probably carry the same brands.

For what it's worth I've used Eeuroparts.com for Volvo and Saab parts and have been satisfied with prices and service. Last fall, I replaced the radiator (and rad hoses) and heater core in my 98 S70 and got everything from them. I got the Nissens radiator and it's been fine (5000 miles so far).

Be sure to pull off all the fittings from your old radiator (the metal clips that the mounting screws go through and the rubber bushings with metal sleeves on each "wing" to install on your new radiator for mounting it. Someone else suggested reusing the hose clips for the ATF hoses and that worked fine for me too.

I had such difficulty fitting the new lower radiator hose onto the back of the engine block that I finally gave up. I was trying to get at it from above. Later, I realized that I could have gotten much better access from below, so I'll get that one changed next time I drain the coolant.
