Adding keyless entry and central lock button. help/advice needed. 850 1995

i have a 1995 850 wagon that does not have keyless entry or the central lock button on the dashboard.

i have collected all the missing parts (i think...)

1)i have the central lock relay unit
2)the keyless entry module
3)the keyfob (the FCC numbers match)
4)and the central lock button/switch for the dash.

i have the keyless entry module installed on the green plug to the right on the glovebox, the keyfob and module have matching FCC ID's, i found the empty plug for the central lock switch behind a blank space next to the "tracs" and rear window "defroster" and plugged it in there.

(it seems that the volvo option plugs have a set of specific tabs/keys that wont allow the wrong plug to be installed on any particular switch, am i correct?)

now i need to find where this relay is supposed to go...
i searched the archives here and in a few threads i read that i should find the plug for the relay behind the heat/AC controls or behind the glovebox. when i look back there and/or bend my neck under the dash with a flashlight i cant see any place for the relay. my chilton book deosn't know either and the wiring diagram is a bit like chinese arithmatic.

does anyone have a better description/writeup of how to do this or maybe even a pic? im a visual learner...

thanks a bunch!

Most of the '95 models didn't use the central locking dash button. If yours is set up for it the correct switch position is directly next to the headlight switch. For the '95 model year though that switch position was used for the front fog lights so I'm not sure what connector you will find behind that panel.

The switch position that you plugged into is the slot reserved for the Info switch that ties to the trip computer.

The relay is the 210/211 relay and it plugs into the lower portion of the central electrical unit. Directly to the left of the steering column, high on the firewall. It takes a considerable contorting to get to it.

There is a wealth of information in the manual which can be downloaded for free here:

Best of luck,

thanks lee.

the plug next to the headlamp wouldn't fit, and the only blank plug that fit the back of the lock switch was near the tracs and defroster switches.

so, i guess the central lock switch cant be easily connected in my application?

i appreciate your help.

How do your door locks behave with the key? On my '94 which doesn't have the deadlock or the dash switch all of the doors open when I open the door with the key. On my '96 only the drivers door opens unless the door key is turned to the unlock position twice in fairly quick succession. The '96 has the dash switch.

The '96 did not come with the keyless remote locking from the factory but all I had to do was install the receiver and program the remotes - even though the receiver was from a '93/'94 it worked just fine.

The '94 actually had the factory option installed but the remotes were not with the car when I bought it. Once I got proper remotes and programmed them it worked fine as well.

Hopefully you have the electric locking solenoids on your car. If not you will need them as well.

What relay do you have? I think the correct relay for your car would be part number 3545829.

I have the keyless entry system working. When i tried to program the key fob it was unsuccessful. I tried a few more times and then i went to put the relay in, there was already a central locking relay in the car. so i swapped it out. it was not easy to reach but i got it in and programmed the fob the first time and it works well. I think ozark lee was right, the 1995 850 doesnt have the dash plug for the lock switch, but im happy to have keyless entry!

this is another set on eBay that i saw yesterday.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=013&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=230228815257&rd=1

works well and its OEM not after market stuff.

thanks a bunch!

on my '95 wagon all doors unlock with the key in the door, and all locks operate from the interior driver and passenger doors so the selenoids are there. i was able to get the receiver in behind the glovebox but ran out of daylight before i found where to plug the relay in. perhaps tommorow or the next day i'll have a chance and then give it a try to see if i can program the fob to the receiver. i appreciate your time and help ozark lee.

thanks a bunch!
