Help my 850 won't start 850

Back Story:
So this started back in december, i've been putting it off till it warms up...

Car was parked in the street and I went to start it. Car started and died instantly. Car then turns, but won't start. Checked voltage, OK. Tried jumping it anyway (hard to explain it wasn't the battery to non-technical people), still no start. There is fuel at the rails - don't know the pressure, but it is under pressure. Checked all lines I could find, everything connected on the air/vacuum lines.

Idle air valve was making noise, pulled it out, cleaned it out - less noise, but it is open.

connected spark plug wire directly to ignition coil, inserted random spark plug, with generous gap - NO SPARK. Shortened gap - .025-.035" - NO SPARK.
2 questions:
1)Hayne's manual says check the resistance of the ignition coil, but does not give any value - Does anyone know what this should be? And across where should I be measuring the resistance.

2) Local junkyard has ignition coil from 1998 70 series, is this compatible?

Thanks,

~Jon

Hmmmm. If there are no codes, it is usually a fuel problem. But if there is no spark, and you are grounding the plug against the engine or body, then it could be a result of the security system.

Try locking and unlocking the car with the remote, make sure the doors are closed when doing this. If the car then starts and immediately stalls, the security system thinks the car is being stolen. There is a security ring behind the keyed portion of the switch which may have faild.

Klaus,

Locked and unlocked the car with the remote. Car started, idled for a few seconds, then died. Tried again, no start at all.

How do I remove the switch? I'm a little hesitant to start pulling screws out, without some guidance, and then set off a 15 year old air-bag.

Thanks

~Jon

4 torx screws under the steering wheel that hold the cover on. 2 are easy to get off, the other 2 are a royal pain. Air bag is not a problem.
Once the clamshell is off, check the wiring behind the key part of the ignition and clean it up. You don't need the clamshell to start or drive the car.

the coil for V70 is the same.but you should first read the codes and see whats the problem.personally i found that the ignition coil and the cam position sensor fail the most especially the cam sensor.good luck

Checked the codes. Nothing was tripped.

There are several things that will prevent ignition. Of course there is the coil itself. Then the microprocessor (computer). The cam position sensor will not allow it to start, but if it fails while running it will continue to run. Tha is a good bet, but not the only thing. The crank position sensor will not allow it to continue running if it fails.

How do I check if the sensor is failed? Also still wondering about the resistance on an ignition coil.

Thanks...

I think this could be the antenna ring around the ignition barrel. It is usually the connector that goes open circuit. Unplug it, spray some switch cleaner on it and then plug/unplug a few times. The ring picks up the data from the key transponder chip and if it doesn't receive the siganal, then the car won't start.
