spark but no start 850 1995

Hi Brickboarders.
I have a '95 850 Turbo (wagon; dark green/teal) with '94 engine, about 90k miles. I've been using only 91 or 93 octane for several months.
It began to have trouble starting on cold, wet Fall mornings. The battery had lots of greenish grunge on one terminal, and the car did start when I hooked it up to the battery charger, so I replaced the battery and put in some dri-gas. For a few days it started most of the times I wanted it to.
I brought it to my pretty reliable mechanic. He spent about 5 hours investigating and replacing ignition wires, fuel filter, etc. That helped but didn't solve it. A few days later I had to have it towed back - the tow driver said it was turning over, but now it's not starting at all, regardless of the weather.
Pretty Reliable Mechanic said he found power at the coil but no spark, so he replaced the coil (along with other parts attached to it) - $270. He was sure that would solve it,
but it didn't.
Thursday afternoon he says there's spark but it still won't start and he thinks he needs to replace the crank sensor. It might be ready Friday, depending on when the part arrives.
Monday afternoon I call and he says he doesn't know what to do, probably I ought to send it over to the dealer. I didn't find out if he did get around to replacing the crank sensor.
I don't know what I'm going to do about charges for parts and labor, but that's not my question --
Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with the car?
