Turbo drain seals S80

I have a 2001 S80 t6. Noticed a burning smell recently, and local indie says it's oil leaking from the turbo drain seals -- around $500 to fix. IPD sells the gasket for $8.50, so parts are $17 (because it's a twin turbo). Is it really possible that this job takes 6+ hours?

Only found conflicting information by searching. In an earlier post (http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=803533) Chris says:

We've only had to do these seven times, most times they were under warranty, and we jumped for joy. I have three techs, so being fair, only one of the guys has had to do it three times, therefore no tricks have been learned as yet. It is a HUGE pain in the ass, with a lift, and no tricks up our sleeves, it is a steady four hour job. Just have a cool engine, and a cool temper. Breathe in...breathe out...buy an extended warranty...

On the other hand, IPD said on the phone that it's maybe an hour, and others seem to have done it themselves using the IPD kit. What's the story? Is it so hard to get at on a 2001 S80 that it really takes forever, or am I getting a bad deal?

ANSWER Turbo drain seals S80

The twin turbo models have very little space to be able to remove and install the lines. A few tips I have found helpful. I was able to do these in much less than 6 hours.

It helps to remove the r axle and the axle center bearing support.

Loosen the coolant feed line near #1 cylinder in the back of the engine. Remove the upper banjo bolt and you can remove the lower banjo, but it can be really difficult to get back in. If you loosen it, sometimes you can get the return line out and back in.

I use a little crazy glue on the new return line gasket to keep it attached o the line when installing. Lube the seal with oil or vaseline to help installation.

That's all I can think of right now.

Thanks. I called local dealer, and they gave the exact same price. Must be using the same estimating system or something. Anyway, sounds like a hassle -- maybe not six hours, but much more than I would want to do myself. Guess I just need to find a good local indie to take care of this nice but slightly troublesome car ages.

I miss the Swedish Car Center in Venice, CA -- best mechanics I've come across in in years of having Volvos in four different states.
