noisy lifters suspected 850 1996

Hi gang!
I need your help before I get elbow deep in this engine.
I have a 96 855R with manual transmission.
302,000kms. I'm the 2nd owner and the car has always used Mobil 1 10w30 oil.
In the past at start-up when cold the lifters ticked for a minute then all was well but recently, when cold no sound at all but as water temp registers on gauge I'm getting a steady lifter ticking between 2000 and 3000 rpm. A slight increase in rpm makes the sound go away. I hooked up an external oil pressure gauge and it read as follows when engine was running at normal temp:
4000rpm=75psi
3000rpm=62psi
2500rpm 54psi
900rpm=24psi
I figure the oil pan O-rings are good and have ordered all new tappets from fcpgroton but would welcome input from you all before I dig into this engine.
P.S. I added some lucas oil thickener as a quick test and no change at all.
Thanks folks and sorry for the long post, there wasn't anything similar in the archives.
Klaus

    Hi Klaus,
    From what I can read, it sound like your oil pressure is on the high side. It should be around 15psi at 900rpm. Have you tried any engine cleaners yet to remove sludge?
    Replacing all of the tappets will be a difficult task.

      I have never used Auto Rx in a White engine, just old red blocks. If you follow the directions, you will not hurt the bearings. That only happens when people make up their own directions and drive the car with AutoRx in it.
      Just change the filter, not the oil, which drains about 1 quart of old oil with the filter. Then add the quart of AutoRx and get the engine up to operating temps, then change the oil and filter. Done.
      Back in the old days, with the American iron blocks, kerosene was sometime used to get the same gunk out of the low revving engines. Same good results, but they didn't have an oil breather system. I wouldn't try that in today's engines.

      If you replace the tappets, bathe the new ones in clean oil before inserting them into their respective holes. And remember, they will require break-in time, so no high revving for a few hundred miles. If tappets are to be reused, they must be put back into the same position where they were taken out of.

        Thanks for the info Klaus.
        I have some time off at the end of sept so I'll probably just replace all the lifters.
        I'll be sure to bathe them prior to install as you had mentioned and post the results when the problem is solved.
        Thanks again,
        Klaus

      Hi Klaus,
      Thanks for your response, you come to the aid of a lot of people on this forum.
      I was thinking of trying a flush but I've always been led to believe that the stuff is somewhat of a snake-oil type remedy.
      I've noticed from the archive regarding this kind of issue that folks have tried Auto-Rx but I'm just really really concerned with doing bearing damage although tI don't have any experience with the stuff to back up my fear.
      Have you had good results with the various flushes?

      I absolutely love this car but the ticking really is rather embarrassing to say the least.
      I've got the volvo service manual section 2 for engines and it looks somewhat straight forward if I take my time and build some of the tools to help secure the cam to the upper cylinder head half.

      Thanks for your input, it's really appreciated.
      Klaus
