THUD ISSUE V70-XC70

Our 2001 XC70 has lately developed a thud sound that occurs intermittently and seems to be coming from the center of the car. The sound usually occurs between 1st and 2nd gear when we are traveling slowly in a traffic or going through a parking lot. We have had all the codes updated and transmission oil replaced. Is this our transmission going south? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you.

There is a fair sized mounting bolt and bushing that attaches the viscous coupling housing to the frame. If the bushing becomes loose from corrosion or degradation, it will make a heavy clunk sound as the VC moves the driveline against the loose bolt.

    Motor Mounts V70-XC70

I have a 1998 V70 T5 with 110K miles. I suggest that you check all FIVE engine mounts! I have replaced three of mine: Upper and lower torque and the front mount. All needed to be replaced. I'm not sure yet about my two side engine hydraulic (donuts filled with goo) mounts. On my 1989 760 I had to replace the hydraulic mounts since they had both collapsed and the engine pan was sitting on the frame. Not sure how to determine this on the transverse I5 mounts.

      DMANPDI:

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into the mounts issue. Hopefully, this is all that us wrong with this car. For the last seven years this car has been the least troubled Volvo that I have ever owned, and I have owned seven of them.

If it only seems to happen in 1st to 2nd shift, I would suspect an engine or tranny mount, not the tranny itself. Verify that the tranny fluid is not low and inspect all of the mounts.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)
