Clear the Code 850

Hi fellow volvo nuts,

my 850 service light is annoying me!

I service the baby like it were the queen of sheeba.

So how can i clear the service light which comes on every year without having to go cap-in-hand to the volvo dealership to have some guy plug in he toy, clear the light and charge me £10 ($20) for the service?

fnx

If you want to do it yourself you can unplug the battery and reset it that way, if you don't have any tools. BUT if the light comes back on there is a CODE that definetly needs to be read.. aka something is broke and you have to fix it. The volvo check engine light doesn't lie. Older volvos used to have a little button near the tacometer that would allow you to reset the check engine light, I don't think the 850's have it...Good Luck:-) PS, 850's are high maint. I just got my first one. So even if you treat them like the Queen of England they'll crap on you. Do I sound bitter?

Thanks for this useful response...

Bitter? Not a bit of it!!! Our queens have generally behaved like badly maintained cars, except one.

The problem with having to go to Volvo Garages is that they run checks on their computers and then see that the history is not up-to-date and tend to get a bit shirty, like they own your loyalty or something.

You are right, it could be something that needs attention, but then could I not check out the codes myself - my Haynes manual lists them all...

Feedback, experiences, opinions and comments most welcomed!

Andy

If it's the service light, then the only ways:
1. Take the bulb out.
2. Put black tape over it.
3. Have the dealer reset it so it never comes on. (That's what I did.)

"Service light" was mentioned in the original post. This just comes on at regular intervals to ensure maintenance service is performed. If you do it yourself and can't reset it you could just disable it as it has nothing to do with error codes.

"Check Engine" light means codes have been set and they need to be read prior to resetting.

Hope this helps.

Bryan

Yes thanks Brian, that's a great help - I now appreciate the distinction between service and check lights.
