850 wagon tailgate struts--trouble prying off and metal stripping off socket

Got one tailgate strut loose--the other side is stubborn. Through repeating prying, I've stripped most of the socket away, little bits of metal crumbling off. Where's the best pry spot on these for leverage? It seems like they have to turn up a little while being pushed out--but I don't know for certain. Thanks for any tips here. This part seemed like it would be a piece of cake.

wagon tailgate struts: crow bar works, but screwdriver doesn't cut it

Well a crow bar with more leverage is the ticket to prying off those stubborn tailgate struts.

My 854 had a C clip to pull off first, then the strut came right off. If you are talking about the other end, it just pops off.

Thanks Klaus. My 855 doesn't seem as straight forward. I don't see any C clips--check out my photos if you have a chance. My mechanic friend suggested we could cut through the socket--but there's got to be an elegant way... way more elegant way.

Thanks, as always, Klaus. I appreciate that you are always taking time to share tips.

Time for a crowbar and/or a rubber mallet with a little bit of elbow grease! Those things are easy to get on but oddly harder to get off than they look. A die saw as a last resort.
