burned valve-or not? 850 1993

I've done a search for this, but couldn't find a conclusive answer. First a little background. I was given a 93 850, that wouldn't start. After new plugs, draining the oil that was about two quarts overfilled, cleaning the flame trap, and putting a new oil filler cap on, I got it to start. It was obvious that something wasn't quite right, so I did a compression check. All cylnders were around 185 except #1 which was zero (this was cold). So I thought maybe it was a stuck lifter or carbon build up on the valve stem and took it out for a sustained high-rpm run. Now I get about 40 lbs. on #1. So my questions is, does this sound like a burned or partially burned valve or will more aggressive high-rpm and maybe some kind of engine flush cure it? I don't think the engine is really worth tearing into because it shows 298,000 on the odometer. It does run pretty well when you get the rpms up though, just a little shaky at idle. What do you think? Is a burmned valve always zero compression or does anything less than normal compression indicate a valve problem?

An old method I've used on several other vehicles, but not a modern Volvo, was to add about a tea spoon of oil through the spark plug, and then do a compression test. If there is a significant rise for a short time, then generally it is worn rings, as the oil completes the seal. If there is little or no increase, then expect something much more serious, such as a burnt valve or broken ring.

PBH, I'd be interested in learning how you could tell from the sound on a blow down test. I could expect if you have air coming out the exhaust, then vales, or through the crankcase breather, rings. Explain if you can. Thanks! Checksix

I don't like cold compression checks, just because the rings aren't warmed up yet, among other things.
You went from zero to 40psi. That is a good start. With the oil over full, there was probably very little circulation. I would hope that a valve that has not rotated in a while could be made to re-seat itself, but I am always an optimist :) If you find the compression going up in about a week, that would be a good sign! There has been a lot of damage to the valves and probably the lifters are clogged. You could try an engine cleaner to get out some of the sludge.
Any good mechanic will want to remove the head and put in new valves...

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not currently driving the car, but I know that's the only way the valve might clear itself up. I'm relutant to pull the head because I like to be very thorough on any car I'm going to drive and I can see myself doing the timing belt, water pump, tensioners, pulleys, motor mounts, etc. and before I know it, my free car has cost me over $1000 in parts and still has beat suspension and who know's what else it might need (a/c evap?). I'm using it as an intro and learning guide to the 850/s70 as my next DD will probably be one of those. I am impressed by the free-reving nature of the engine- not nearly as tractor-like as my B21FT! Thanks.

I would do a leak-down. The blow-by noise should tell you if it's exhaust or intake valve or bad rings.

I would also say that 298,000 does not mean it's not worth pulling the head. The engine could easily do another 100,000.
