more info for no start 3-1-1 A1 trans code 850

More information on no start...the only engine code I get is 3-1-1 which acording to volvospeed is an RPM sensor. I'm relatively new to this car. Where is the RPM sensor and could it just be wires shorting somewhere else. I know the 940 wires used to rub bare and short out showing no signal from the Rpm sensor. Any help would be great.

The RPM sensor is mounted on top of the flywheel, it is below and behind the air intake hose. Check to make sure the wire from the sensor does not run too close to the coil wire. I had sudden cut out issues with my car, and I believe they were corrected by properly mounting the stand-off clip / post thingy that is at the end of sensor wire so that none of the wires ran too close to the coil wire.

A 3-1-1 should not have any bearing on the no start condition. Is the fuel pump priming when the key is in pos II? The fuel pump relay is under the fuse box, #103.
If there are no codes in A2, then I would suspect a fuel delivery problem.
Some times the cam position sensor can get balky, just tap on it a few times. It is next to the distributer cap.

you were right about the code...it wasn't that. Of course, it wasn't an A1 code...it was an A3 code...but that's a time for another post. I tried tapping the cam position sensor with no luck. I am not getting the priming of the fuel pump so I guess the fuel pump relay must be the problem. I tried removing and tapping. It has not been replaced in at least 30 miles. What is the life expectancy? How much cvan I expect to pay for one? Any help would be great. Thanks again Klaus.

Don't forget to check fuse #2. The life of a FPR? That could be a very long time, from 100-200K, and it depends on whether or not you have a turbo to help heat up the engine compartment.
The cover of the fpr should come off easily, and you will see the contacts inside. When it breaks, it is usually the solder joints that have cracked. The price of a new one will not break your bank. There have been writups where someone has bypassed the fpr to keep the fuel pump running as long as the key is in posII. I forgot which terminals in the PFR need to be hot wired. Sorry.

I replaced my fuel pump relay (and checked fuse#2) and got no relief. The car still won't start. It cranks, plenty of spark. Just no start. I'm looking at the fuel pump. I hear that I don't have to take off the tank, just go through the trunk. Any thoughts about how long it might take? Any help would be great. Thanks.
