A/C won't start, please help! S70 1998

Hi,

Just bought a 98 S70 recently and much to my chagrin, the A/C doesn't work. First, I tried recharging it with those DIY kits from the parts store but apparently, the system doesn't need recharging. What I found out is that the compressor won't even start-up when the A/C button in the dash is activated. I don't know where to start. Can you please direct me accordingly?

Thanks!

Do you have manual temperature controls or automatic?

In our 850s, the controls work opposite each other. With the manual system the AC light comes on when you turn it on, with the automatic system, the AC light comes on when you shut it OFF!

Have you read your owner's manual?

The AC also will not operate if the outside temperature is under a certain temperature.

A few people disconnect the power to the AC clutch in their car for winter so that it will not run when the defroster is on - This is in an attempt to save fuel.

Can you make the AC clutch operate when you turn the AC on?

If the AC has too much refrigerant in it, it will not work, I think that the clutch won't even operate.

Why did you add refrigerant in the first place? Was the clutch kicking in a lot? How do you know it doesn't need a charge?

      Hi James,

My volvo actually has a manual temperature control. I tried adding refrigerant using one of those DIY kits with the pressure gauge from the parts store, but the gauge showed that it had too much pressure. Also, the compressor wouldn't even engage when I turn on the manual control even though the outside temperature is about 80 degrees. Can you please advise as to how to proceed?

      Thanks

There is a pressostat switch on the low pressure line near the firewall. Pull the switch off, make sure the AC is "on" and the engine running. Then take a piece of wire and connect each end of the wire to the switch - making it on. That should start your compressor. If it does, then you may need a new switch.

If not, then take a broom handle and gently, and very carefully!, push on the clutch and see if it engages. If it engages, then you will need to close the clutch gap by moving bushings from the rear of the clutch to the front.

If not that, then check the electrical supply to the compressor and to the switch in the dash.

Does the AC light come on when the button is in?

After the car has been running for a while, does the face on the control unit get really hot?

I ended up having some type of short in the control unit. I bought a used one and it took care of it.

When i had the AC on (and it didnt turn on) the recirc and ac lights did not come on
