2001 V70T5 Transmission(auto) fluid change intervals? V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 V70T5. The dealer (get most of service done there) tells me Volvo states trans fluid to be changed only "when looks dirty" as its a special fluid, very expensive ($400+ for the change).

Car/trans have been running well, now @ 113K miles, but kind of unsure about this situation.

I have seen the various & lengthy debates here on how often one should change the fluid. I'm looking for some independant recommendations and explanations from readers here.

Thanks in advance.

When a car company says "lifetime", I always infer that they mean until the warrantee expires.
It is time to flush your tranny with Mobile 3309 fluid. DIY in 30 minutes with out raising the car off the floor. $400 for a dealer flush is a bit much.

I must admit I did not pay attention to cost when I have had this done in an identical car. I think I would have noticed had it cost me $400!

I had been getting a Trans Service Required message and thought I was in trouble. My independent mech, good in every other way, had used regular Volvo trans fluid, not the special fluid required for an 01 T5. When the right fluid was put in, message went away.

I have been tracking discussion of change interval and gather that the recommended interval is too long. The transmission in that car is vulnerable, and the longer you let it go, it seems the more likely it will fail. I believe mine has been flushed at least twice.

Have you had your trans software updated to remove stop neutral? That also is recommended as a way to keep the trans going as long as possible (my car is 113K just the same as yours :)) I have to say I like the feel better also with stop neutral gone.

FWIW, my car is running great--feels great to drive and looks terrific.. Owned it since new. Still tempted to chip it one day .

Best wishes.

You should consider adding a Magnefine filter in the rubber cooler line to the radiator. It will remove the magnetic wear particles and is a fine particle filter too. IPDusa.com sells them. Others have them too so google it. You need the 3/8 inch size. I use this filter in the power steering return line too. Mind the flow direction in both applications.
If you need convincing, dangle a small magnet in the P/S reservior for a bit and see what it collects. I tied one with nylon cord, dangling from the cap spring, some years ago and became a believer.
I also disassembled a filter removed from the tranny line and found lots of black metal dust trapped on the magnet inside.
BTW, I would also change my fluid by 100K mi. The "lifetime" fluid story is a myth. The filter will not restore burned fluid. Were I you, and planning on keeping the car, I would do both. The fluid is also sold by IPD and others if it is the special Mobil fluid. I use Dextron equivalent Mobil 1 ATF or Amsiol ATF in my S80. It's a simple DIY project. Don't even have to raise the car. Also an ideal time to install a filter.
