THIS HAPPENED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THEN A STRONG SMELL LIKE A BURNT CLUTCH. MADE TO KY DECIDED TO LEAVE CAR THERE AND RENT ONE FOR REST OF TRIP. THE CAR SEEMS TO DRIVE OK ON DRY ROADS. WILL NEED TO RETURN TO PA FROM KY. WILL I HAVE A PROBLEM GETTING THERE. I AM SURE THE BEVEL GEAR IS SHOT. CAN VEHICLE BE TURNE INTO A 2WD INSTEAD OF AWD? PLEASE HELP.

    BEVEL GEAR PROBLEM ? V70-XC70 1999

If you disconnect the drivshaft to the rear, make sure you mark which bolts go where. If it gets reconnected, it must be exactly the same bolts in the same holes.
Try pumping out the bevel gear oil and putting fresh oil in. So long as the road is dry, you should not have a problem on interstates.

    Remove rear driveshaft ? .... V70-XC70 1999

Can't comment on your diagnosis, but I've read of quite a few folks on this forum who have converted from AWD to FWD by just removing the rear driveshaft -- it doesn't seem any more involved.

    Good luck.
