Loud Screeching from Center of Engine? 850 1995

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1995 850 Turbo automatic that needs a new PNP switch. I've known this for awhile but have been doing the fix I saw on this forum where I move the shifter back and forth and it's been working great. Now it's getting harder to start so it's time to replace it. I'm wondering if I could have done damage to the engine or some other part while holding off on the PNP replacement because now when I start the car, there is a loud screaching sound coming from the center of the engine. Does anyone know what this could be? I called the mechanic today and he thought it might be the starter. I have had absolutely no problems starting the car except what the PNP switch has caused and as long as the shifter was in the right place, the car would start right up. If anyone out there has any idea what this screeching might be, would you please contact me? I like to have some idea what I'm talking about when I go to the mechanic so he won't get into something I don't need. I know there are lots of females out there who know alot about cars but I'm not one of them and can use all the help I can get. This forum has saved me tons of money in the past and I'm hoping it will this time too!!!! Thanks for any info/help. I APPRECIATE it!!!! Laurie

That is most probably your starter motor not returning I suggest you do not drive the car in this condition

Eveyone, Laurie sent me an email to tell me it was her alternator after all and now that it's replaced, everything is back to normal.

    Hi,
test your belt by starting the car and pouring few drops of water on the belt is the sound changes it there. if not it might be the water pump or roller/tensioner bearing.

It probably is not screaching while the starter is engaged, but immediately after, and only when the engine is cold. If that is the case, then the belt that drives the alternator and the power steering is slipping. You need to have another person stand in front of the car, with the hood up, when you first start the car and try to pinpoint the location of the noise. Even a general location will help.

You may need a new belt. And a new PNP, it is not that expensive. The PNP problem did not cause the current noise.

Klaus' explanation sounds right. If you could describe the screech a bit more (duration, occurence relative to cranking) it might help. Is this screech there until the car idles a minute or so? If you drive off, does the screech go away as you get up to 5-15mph? If so, that sounds like the belt. Klaus may be able to read between the lines better than I. I first envisioned the screech occuring as you were cranking the engine and just after starting (I don't know why).

If it is the belt, as Klaus suggests, someone (it can be you if the screech lasts 30 seconds or more) standing outside with the hood up will find the screech appears to be coming from the passenger side of the engine.

Mine did this two years a go (once) and this past year (once). My car exhibits an anomoly when driving through puddles where all the indicator lights light up but the engine runs fine. These symptoms both point to that belt and I haven't gotten around to it. If it does it regularly you'll want to get it fixed.

        Don,
You need to put the splash pan back on your car. It keeps water from splashing up on the S-belt. If you don't have one, call a local junk yard. 3 clips hold it on to the front bumper and 2 10mm bolts on each side.
