Best way to remove rear main seal from engine 850 1994

After many days and weeks of plotting, planning and wrench twisting, This transmission is on its Volvo stand along side the car. Next is to remove the seal without screwing up the crank and seal holder.

Open to best safest way to do this and thanks

You are over thinking this one. Stuff a screwdriver between the crank and the seal and lever it out of there, not rocket science.

And...make sure the surface is clean and smooth before oiling up a new seal and pressing it in.

It is cleaned and installed. Now cleaning the engine, transmission plus new axle seals and torque converter seal. Also replacing the wireing covers. I have the appearance of a bad Tide commercial.

Thanks Mark. Got it out and new in although not all the way. Time for a break. I bought the Volvo tool that hooks onto the transmission and had a quarter inch 18 x 18 inch steel plate made for the bottom to which it is bolted. Anyway, still am safe and into the rehab part of the car. Lot of cleaning to do and replacement of wiring conduit.

Good deal, those late style rear main seals with the fuzzy stuff on the outside are kind of weird huh? I actually had one bite me in the ass here a couple of months back. I stuffed it in just like I always do with the factory tool, which is kind of weird too, inspected it with a flashlight and missed the little spot at the top where the seal rolled. Thank God it was a 960 and not an 850 because it gushed oil like a pig when I fired it up. Apparently after 20+ years of wrenching on Volvos I still needed some practice R&Ring 960 trannies, sheeeesh.
