Tail light failure -- not bulb, holder, or fuse V70-XC70 2001

Hey everybody,

My 2001 V70's RH lower tail light is out. Swapped the bulb and its holder to the other side and they worked. All fuses look OK, all other bulbs (incl. license plate) still function. Also there is no warning message as we usually get when a bulb goes out. Any ideas for other things to check? Thanks much.

Check you rear fog light switch first, to see if it is on. The lowest bulb bracket is for fog lights.

Tail light failure -- not bulb, holder, or fuse V70-XC70 2001

Klaus,

I realize, I'm reviving an old thread here, but I'm having the same problem as the original poster and more (no RH tail light, no rear fog light, no license plate lights, no cargo light). I understand that these probably don't all go together, so my main concern is the tail light. I've replaced the fuse--it was blown--as well as the bulb--which, I suspect, wasn't, to no avail. I swapped the sled/shuttle/holder, whatever it's called to the LH side where it did indeed work. The wiring seems to be sound, but I have big hands and, for the life of me, can't get the connector right above the bulb to come out so I can inspect it, though it appears sound under cursory inspection. I did turn on the rear fog light as you mentioned in your earlier response, but it didn't illuminate either. The brake lights and turn signals are functional.

Tangentially related: Am I right in assuming that there should be a noise dampening panel in the right side compartment like there is in the left?

Many thanks.

pete

EDIT: I had replaced dash fuse #31 but it's just blown again. I'm sorry to be a dunce, but would this indicate a short circuit is my problem? And, thus, that I need to spend some time tracing it?

In your case I would look for a broken wire in the rear harness that goes around the hinge in the liftgate.

Not only were you right, Klaus, but it started smoking this morning. It was frayed and heating up some electrical tape that may have been there from an earlier repair. I'll look around, but do you have any tips relevant to replacing this harness (I'm assuming, it's the "trunk lid harness")?

The diagram I'm looking at points to two things, one labeled 54/50 and and the other 53/606. Are these Volvo part #s and are there any caveats against aftermarket wiring harnesses that you know of?

Thanks again!

I couldn't find the 63-202 and these pictures are pretty vague to say the least. I would call the Volvo parts dept and ask them for their price and part number. It might be worth the extra $15 to get OEM and know it fits.

Your first task is to unbundle the wires and temporarily repair it. No need to burn up the car. Besides, that will allow you to find the connector points and know exactly which bundle needs replacing.
