Timing Belt Replacement, How Much $? 850

I like my mechanic but his prices have been going up. How much should a timing belt be with tensioners and pulleys. no water pump, no oil seals. I know a should probably close my eyes and take the medicine, but...What if I say just under $900?
Thanks

Boy, that IPD cam tool, serpentine belt tool and about an hour and a half of sweat per car sure look good right now. 850 and S70 running just fine. Now where is that $1000 I saved, exactly?

I had the Belt/tensioners, etc replaced on my 95 850 T-5R sedan about 1.5 to 2 months ago at my Volvo dealership. I did NOT do the water pump (basically just the essentials for the belt) and it was approximately $540. Granted that's not exactly cheap, but it's a heck of a lot less than $900. Hope your mechanic takes it easy on ya!

I just had these done on our 1995 850 turbo sedan for $310, parts and labor, ... at our VOLVO dealer (in the greater Chicago area)!

The labor for the timing belt ALONE is typically 2.5 hours. Adding the tensioners/pulleys adds more (can't remember exactly--I want to say 3.5 hrs, total, incl. tbelt). Genuine vo parts, retail, around $50 for tbelt and $250+ for others. That results in an estimate here in TN from dealer for "bout $600$700."

I ordered parts from Volvo of Houston (miguel) for about 20% off and had my new indie do the job for $54/hour. He (like most all indies) bills the same time as a dealer, but w/ lower per hour rate (dealer here is a modest $75).

All that is to say w/ all the running around, so to speak, I spent around $190 parts and $190(?) labor -- total of around $400(?). If you do the FCP Groton thing and order non-volvo parts (I don't), you can get all those parts for a good bit less.

I don't know about dealer labor rates in other regions, but I'd be very surprised if you can likely find high-level indies that do the job for half. I expect to pay about 20% less, give or take, but I've eased up on my critism of dealers a lot over the yrs.

A good shop should only charge 2 hours of labor. Call your local dealer and ask them, then the indi should charge about half that?

Rocky Top's appraisal of the situation is a little closer to reality. Independents do not charge half of what the dealer does, not and stay in business they don't. My local dealer is at $115.00 while my shop bills at 75.00. List price on a belt, tensioner, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley is $410.00 plus labor. Job should pay 2.5 hours for a simple belt change and an additional.5 or so to change out the two pullies. In my shop you are looking at about $650.00 or so with tax, stuff a water pump on it and you are looking at closer to $900.00. If all things were equal the dealer would be charging another $40.00 per hour to bring the belt and pulley price up to about $770.00. Now as far as using your own parts on this job, I think that is foolish. I will use customer parts but I will offer no parts warranty on someone else's parts, how can you really. Now if your timing belt comes apart the shop owner is going to do everything he can to put the blame on the part and not the workmanship and you will then be an owner of a scattered motor. Let the man make the profit on the parts and provide you with a warranty on a rather critcal job.

You live in the wrong zip code Mark. In the twin cities, indies are getting $90-100/hour and the dealer only $115. Most Volvo indies here use generic parts, not OEM, and that infuriates me to no end.
I am going to make an appointment this week to have the AWD oils changed and the front end aligned (right front pulls a little). If he drills drain holes, it may cost a little more!
My timing belt is due in 15K miles and I will ask him what his charge will be. I like to keep my dealer happy and on my side, but he also knows that I do a lot of my own maint.

Geez, they tell us that So. Cal is expensive!! You are kidding about the drain holes right, and if not then just exactly what are they going to drill drain holes in? Last time I had to put any drain holes in a Volvo it was in the tail lamp assemblies.
