My 850 stalls, please help! 850 1995

I have a 1995 950 Turbo wagon, automatic with 200.006 miles. It has been running great until about two weeks age when it started to slowly come to a stall. The car would start kind of chocking and then the engine would stop.

But it would restart without any delay and run okay for a minute or two and then the process would repeat itself.
In between it ran great. I took it to an independent shop specializing in foreign cars and asked them to take a look. After a test drive they said the problem was with the Turbo inter hose and the Turbo inter pipe. They were old and worn and collapsed under load. I okayed the repair and after about $400.00 they proudly said that the car was fine.

I drove the car out of the shop and within a half an hour it started acting up again. Next morning I took the car back to the shop, after an hour or so they found that the spark plugs were the wrong kind,"AC plugs that instead of the Volvo plugs", and there was a vacuum leak . After an other $155.19 I drove the car out of the shop and it soon began to behave the same way as before.

So now I am stuck and screwed and hope some one can come up with a solution for me, don't want to take it back to the shop and throw more money away. BTW, the shop supposedly check the fuel pump and ran a diagnostic scan and it showed no fault codes.

Thank you all in advance, Peter

Aside from fuel system - maybe there is another vacuum leak - could be an intermittent one which is worse when the engine is torqued on its mounts to one position or another?

That being said, vacuum leaks often trigger fault codes and you don't report any. How about your fuel filter or dirt in the tank?

The fuel filter is only a couple of months old, the fuel pump is also relatively new, 2 years old. Thanks.

Sucks that this shop keeps charging you for repairs that aren't fixing your problem? A few other people will probably chime in here, but those symptoms sound similar to mine before I had to replace the Cam Postion Sensor. I also heard that the Fuel Pump relay can also cause the same symptoms you described. Try a shop that specializes in Volvos since these replacement parts seem to always come up in stalling topics.

You can check your own codes using the two little boxes behind the passenger side headlight.
If there are no codes, it is usually fuel related. I suspect it is the fuel pump relay, number 103? When it gets hot, it fails. When cold, it works. You can pull the case off the relay and watch it work, pretty neat. Just don't get it wet!

I would stay away from that garage that doesn't know beans about "foreign" cars! Especially Volvo.

I just went through a similar problem on my
850. Klaus is definitely on the right track -
It sounds like a fuel pump/relay problem.

My car stalled on the highway - no codes
would not restart. After it cooled down,
it started. The problem continued for
several days, but got worse and worse
eventually the pump died and would not
work at all. A bad pump will not set a code.
New fuel pump went in - no more problems.
Check the relay first as it is cheaper.
Changing the fuel pump on this car was easy

Thanks for the reply. The difference between your problem and mine is that after my car stalls, it will start up immediately, than a feww minutes later it my stall again but will restart. The fuel pump in my car is two years old and the filter is just a couple of months old. I am hoping it's the relay, that would be an easy fix.
Thanks for your help!

FPR failure was very common on the 740's. They'd stall running down the road at 65 mph Coast to the shoulder and sit awhile and they'd fire right up. SOunds like the shop you're dealing with specilizes in parts swapping. They don't know what the hell to do so they keep swapping out parts hoping to hit the problem. Go somewhere else.
