ABS - Anti-lock braking system V70-XC70 1998

Question - I have a v70 1998 stationwagen with about 85K miles. The ABS light went on. I had a garage check the brakes which he said were okay, but he said he didn't check the ABS and doesn't know why the ABS light comes on. (We had some communication issues (language difficulty) so I am not sure if he understood what I was trying to say.)

The ABS light comes on every so often and it doesn't stay on.

Is it necessary to get this ABS light checked asap or can it wait for a few hundred miles?

Do the ABS brakes and regular braking system work totally independently of each other?
