can I turn off my check engine light? V70-XC70

I haved a '98 v70 awd. The check engine light is on because I need a new air pump. I do not have the money to buy one right now (they run about $375), but I need to get my car inspected (annual state inspection).

Is there a fuse I can pull, or is there something else I can do, that will turn off the light? I am told that it's a technicality, but the light has to be off even though the air pump not working does not affect the way the car works.

Your emission testing authority will test whether the light is working - that is whether it lights up to report codes that they set during the test for that purpose. If the light is not functioning, you fail due to tampering with the system.

You can reset the check engine light with an obII reader with a reset function. The service light requires a special tool, at least for the 1998 model year. Other years, before and after, are different I believe. The check engine codes are stored in the vehicles computer and stay there for a brief time period, even after they are cleared with the OBII reader, so just disconnecting the light bulb is not going to do you much good. Check here and at Volvo Speed for an alternative to the OEM air pump-I believe you can modifiy a vw pump to work on the volvo at a much lesser cost.

If you get your CEL turned off with an OBDII scanner, that will work until the next time you restart the car. There is no good way to fool the car's computer.
You could pull the instrument cluster and pull out the CEL and service bulbs, but if the test station checks you computer, they will find the codes outstanding. Ask for a hardship extension for 6 months.

If you dont have a code reader, you can reset the "CHECK ENGINE" light by disconnecting your battery for a few minutes. However, the code will continue to reappear until the appropriate repairs are made. Or...if repair/maintenance are of no concern, you could take your dash apart & remove the bulb. If your gonna do that, you may as well take out the "SERVICE" bulb also.

Sure you can. Go to bay 13 (or google "Volvo Bay 13") and there you'll find the code(s) and istructions for resetting the service light. Takes about 2 minutes and requires no tools.

      Armie,
Not on a '98 V70...it doesn't have the junction boxes.
