How to remove ECC and/or fans and/or dashboard to eliminate squeak? S70 1998

Does anyone know how I could remove the climate control unit or the fans in the middle or maybe the dashboard ? There is something rubbing inside. When I press on the dashboard, it stops (see arrows on picture). I would like to open it and see where it is coming from. Thanks in advance.

Pull the radio out (by pushing in the little handles on each side of it, and then pulling the radio striaght out by holding onto the handles that pop out) and then look up in the hole it creates. You'll see a couple of screws...of course this is no gaurantee that you'll be able to get rid of the squeek. Good luck.

Remember that if you disconnect your radio, you'll need the code to reactivate it.

How to remove ECC and/or fans and/or dashboard to eliminate squeak? S70 1998

Thank you for this valuable info. I couldn't believe it was that easy to pull out the radio! I did not see any screws, although this enabled me to grab the opening with my hand and with a back and forth motion, I pinpointed the squeak coming from the dashboard above the glove compartment where the passenger airbag is supposed to be. Now, I'm scared to open this for fear of airbag deploying. Or maybe I'll try unscrewing the bolts above glove compartment and see what I could try to feel inside.

Any tips on removing the dashboard and/or checking airbags ? Do's and dont's ?

Unhook the negative lead on the battery and wait at least 10 minutes before doing anything, then you're safe in regards to the airbags. The glove compartment removal is easy. Unscrew and remove the knee bolster with the 1 screw in the center, open the glove box door and in the hinge area is another set of screws, undo these, then the rest should be self explanatory. Good luck...hope you can find your squeek and get rid of it. There are screws from the engine compartment (through the firewall) that holds the dash in tight. If these have loosened up, you might try tightening from there, but don't over-tighten. The anchors are plastic and they will break, causing more squeeks.

Thanks! I took a peek under the hood. Looks like I need to remove a bit of material to get through the firewall. Do I tear off all these first ? Or should I be going under the dashboard itself ? Looks like a big operation for me this coming weekend!

Take the plastic cowling loose and you'll see the srews that go through the firewall. No need to go through the inside of the car. Someone posted over on the volvospeed.com forum about putting rubber spacers in between the glass and the dash to get rid of squeeks with success. You might want to do a search over there too.

I was able to remove the cowling and saw that the bolt through the firewall was really tight! Didn't want to mess with it. Since I had it open, I dusted off the dust on the cabin filter :-)

Anyway, I took the glove compartment out and it feels that the squeak is coming from the top of the passenger air bag...as if the dashboard and the plastic strip by the windshield (the one with remote control light) are rubbing against each other. I wonder how that plastic strip comes off ?

It could also be loose screws holding the air duct. I put some sponges to hold the air duct in place, but the noise got louder, as if from the blower to duct rubbing each other!

by the way, thanks again for the all the advice!

would love to know how you ended up fixing the squeak, if you did, since I have the same problem.

Well, so far so good....without being able to open the dashboard, I stuck some packing material made of sponge in between the windshield and the dashboard. So think of a 1 inch sponge being compressed in that tiny space about 1/8". That held the dashboard in place and so far has eliminated the squeaking. The sponge was about a foot long and I stuck 2 pieces in. If I could find some thick rubber, I'll replace it, so it lasts longer. Good luck !
