I'm a proud owner of a 850 R Wagon. I'm having problems with front end vibration, when I first noticed it, I thought I had a flat tire, tires seem to be fine. I took it in to a local garage, they rebalanced the tires and checked inflation. Still having the problem. I replaced the front brake rotors to slotted discs, could that be a problem?
Many thanks!

I assume you are referring to a vibration while driving vs idling while stopped.
If the vibration is noticed while driving and not under braking. I would shoot for a balance problem. Even though you had the tires balanced, there can be variances in the tire construction that, when under the cars weight and rolling can exhibit a vibration. Try to find a tire store in your area that has a force balancer. Here is a link to the Hunter site.

Just curious because you didn't say when the vibration occurs, at what speeds or if the brakes are applied or not. When you installed the new rotors, did you make sure you cleaned the rust off hub before installing the rotor? Any old rust/dirt will make it difficult to mount the rotor flat against the hub. A grooved rotor is not the problem. A piston that will not retract will warp the rotor quickly.

I have a 850 GLT and my vibration problems is when I stop, and what I found was that the motor needed re-mounting, metal to metal sends a current to the car body and causes the vibration, excuse the circles I talk in but hey I am a woman, so did the best I can. But that was the problem with mine, thought it was the brakes, then the caliper.

Thanks so much for your help, I thought I'd give you an update on what the problem ended up being. I thought it could be the transmission and took it to a local transmission shop because the car wouldn't display problems until it heated up. The mechanic drove the car until the problem started again (of course, the car was fine upon arrival!)and knew right of the bat what it was.....the brakes were locking up! New caliper on the front left side, new pads in the rear, the car runs like a champ once again. I still am going to replace the motor mount with the one from IPD, it feels a bit loose compared to another Volvo in the family, we have 3, 2 of them R's. We love the brickboard and all the help you seasoned experts bring to the table. Thanks again!

The vibration occurs after the car has warmed up to running temp. The brakes do not neccessarily have to be applied to get the vibration. My Volvo mechanic is a 40 minute interstate drive away, do you think it will be okay to drive it there?

I can't answer you question about the 40 minute drive because I don't know how bad the vibration is. If it is like a wheel out of balance, traveling 5mph under the speed limit in the right hand lane should not be a problem.
If the vibration is "extreme", no. Take it back to the local store where you had it balanced and have one of the techies take it for a test drive.
To test for a stuck caliper, just lightly feel for heat on both front rotors. Be careful, you don't want to burn any fingers! Both rotors should have the same temp.
It is also possible that one of the CV joints went bad. Check the rubber boots for tears. If this is the case, drive to the Volvo shop. Call the mechanic first.

What about possible tranny problems? Heard anything like this? I did notice it is worse in sport mode than economy which makes me think it is tranny related.

Sport vs economy changes the shift point and therefore engine speed. You could have a bad engine mount or three. Or a bent output shaft (least likely). Check the top engine mount to see if it is worn or broken.
When is the last time you had a good tune up?

Vibration from the front is often the round rubber engine stabilizer/mount that comes off of the firewall and it on the driver's side to the side of the engine. Many are replacing these with a poly mount from www.ipdusa.com That's a decent solution as the new type of mount lasts much much longer. Look where I told you and see if the rubber in the circle has deteriorated.

The circle doesn't look bad but when the car shifts in reverse, the engine shifts in the compartment, is that normal?

No...shouldn't move much at all. Take the air filter housing out and see if the other engine/tranny mount under it has deteriorated.

Is the vibration there all the time , or just when you brake? If just when braking, then possibly the rotors. Might also be a caliper that is stuck, or ?

The vibration occurs once the car reaches running temps, the brakes do not neccessarily have to be applied. I do notice it more in as the car coasts.

A bent wheel can cause what you describe. Did the shop dismount and mount a tire for you? If so, they may have bent one. Just a thought and I may be way off.
