ETS light on again after Volvo service V70-XC70

Well, of course it had to happen. 2500 miles after Volvo 'cleaned' the ETM the light came on and the engine ran rough. This time volvo replaced it but why not the first time? We were nearly stranded on the expressway and just returned from a 2200 mile roung trip from Austin to Indiana. I can imagine the thing totally breaking down in Forrest City Arkansas. Geez!

I would guess they cleaned it because 2,500 miles ago, that *was* Volvo's policy. It's not anymore. The ball started rolling last fall, and effective this month, the policy is a 200K mi. replacement warranty, replacing the unit rather than cleaning it, and upgrading one's ETM software to handle the failure in a safer manner.

So, has anyone else experienced where Volvo dealership replaced the ETS without chrging. My 1999 S70 AWD has 46k and would certainly fall within the 200k mile policy.

Everyone, now. Go get yours changed it you're having the issue. If not, at least get the software upgrade for free.

Do they replace it with a beter one ( updated) or with the same crap they put in the first place? I realy would like to get a newer Volvo but I'm kind of turned off by this ETM failures. I would like to keep the car longer than 200k. ( Curent '90 765 has 225K and start showing the age).

I like the Cross County or a nice V70 but I'm not thrilled by AWD ( Arizona) were 850 any better?

      Thank you,

The ETM issue afflicts the '99, '00, and some '01 models -- not later or earlier models. My understanding is that the replacement is a modified design that is more reliable. I've never heard of any '02 or later models being affected.

No 850 has this particular problem. The ETMs in question weren't introduced until the second year of the next generation, and the 850s all had a traditional mechanical throttle rather than the so-called "throttle-by-wire" system.

Thank you for the info. What was your experience with 850 like. I see you sold it but kept the 780. 780 is a classic or rare enough to be kept. How many miles on the 780? Maybe I should throw some money on my 765 and keep it for a bit longer.

          Robert,

Yes, what was mentioned above is exactly right...that's why I bought a '98 S70, which has been a truly reliable car and no more cost than any other car for up-keep. Mileage is in the high 20's with interstate driving, low 20's in the city and mid 20's with combined driving. The same car in a wagon design (V70 is also offered) is a good wagon, as is the '02 and newer V70's, but they are much more expensive and have more computerized gadgetery which only takes a dealer to work on for the most part. I'd stay with a '98 V70 if you want a decent wagon. Check for A/C issues...evaperator replacements are expensive ($1200+) as the dash has to completely come out and other stuff under the dash has to be taken apart as well to get the the thing. Other than that, other repairs are mostly maitenance items and aren't unreasonable if you buy the parts yourself from a place like www.fcpgroton.com and either do these things yourself or have an indy mechanic do them. Timing belt is a 70K miles...make sure it was done if you buy one with more miles. Good luck and let us hear what you decided to do.

They cleaned it because that is the official Volvo way of dealing with it. They will clean it first and if it fixes it then they ship it. Volvo will pay to clean that thing under warranty twice before they ever replace it. Now that is not to say that every tech does it that way but most of the ones that I know do it that way. Clean if first, replace it second or third depending upon the situation.
