Antenna Motor Fried? 850

After turning on the radio this morning I heard the antenna motor making a strange noise.

Now the antenna is stuck in the up position. Even with the radio off the antenna remains up. I don't hear any activation in the antenna motor upon turning the radio or car off.

I pulled the cover back inside the trunk and looked at it. No loose wires or corroded parts. It simply isn't working.

I suppose it's not that serious. Naturally, I will never be able to take the car to a car-wash again and will have to hand wash it.

Is this worth repairing? Is it expensive? Can I just buy a motor with the same rating and replace it myself?

    Antenna Motor Fried? 850

There are two likely possibilities, neither expensive.

    1. The antenna has a long straight plastic gear tooth that the motor gear engages with to move it up and down. If it gets stripped, then the antenna won't move. Get a new antenna insert (from IPD), easy to replace--check on volvospeed, I believe there are instructions, but IPD provides them with their parts.

    2. The O ring in the black antenna guide on the fender is full of crud causing the antenna to stick. This also can cause the plastic gear teeth to srip. When I had a similar problem, merely replacing the guide fixed the problem. If you undo the guide and the antenna now works, you have found the source of your problem and you don't neet to replace the antenna. You can get the guide from your dealer--about $6.00

I bet the relay has failed. Put 12 volts directly to the antenna connections, hear anything? You should be able to find the terminals to bring the antenna down again. U probably don't want to mess with replacing the motor in the antenna, kinda complex. Get another antenna from Erie VoVo.

    Good luck.
