Hello,
I just got back from a 3-week vacation and started up my Volvo, but the climate control fan won't run.
1. When starting the car, if the blower is set to anything other than 0, the AC & REC lights flash simultaneously for about 20 seconds.
2. The blower will not work at all.
3. I pulled the following codes from the B2 port on the diagnostics system:
4-1-1 and 1-2-2.
4. I vacuumed out the sensors behind the grab handles.
5. When the ignition is set in position II, I can hear a sound like a fan running underneath the hood near the passenger's side fenderwell, behind the headlight. The sound continues after the car is started.
Any suggestions would be helpful!

Glad you found the source of the problem.
I found the site to gain access to the blower. Look at the second page, last sentence mentions the recirc door arm.

Ok, I have had some success, thanks to your suggestions.
1. Cleaning the sensors with alcohol made no difference; however, now I know that they are there! I could also verify that both of the small fans were spinning. Would spraying a dry lubricant into the fans be adviseable? I would imagine that doing so could interfere with the thermistors.
2. I attempted to access the fan motor behind the glove box; however, the knee bolster for the impact restraint system is right in the way, so I did not pursue this avenue any further. Klaus, you referred to a procedure in Volvospeed Bay 13 for accessing the fan; I couldn't find it on their website. I'll look again later.
3. I did inspect the pollen filter; it is absolutely trashed. Apparently the previous owners (I have had the vehicle for aproximately 6 months) never changed it. I pulled the filter out and saw the flap directly underneath the filter.
4. I was able to access the squirrel cage fan underneath the flap and it was stuck. I was able to free up the fan, and it functioned correctly (tested it several times). Unfortunatly, when I was probing the flap to see if indeed I could access the fan underneath it, I broke the hinge on the interior side. It is fragile and took very little pressure.
So, my fan is working again, but now I have several new questions.
1. I believe that the fan will probably fail again. I need a good procedure for accessing the fan without getting too deeply involved with the impact restraint systems.
2. I am assuming that the flap underneath the pollen filter is the recirculation/outside air damper. If so, currently the damper is in the outside air position. Other that not allowing me to shut out unpleasant odors and not allowing the AC to cool down the interior as quickly, what other problems can I expect? Will the AC not be as effective overall?
3. Lastly, does anyone have any experience with replacing/repairing this damper? It looks like a big task to me.
Thanks again to everyone, in particular, MadeInJapan, and KlausC.

I just found your post! The B2 122 DTC is for Cruise Control, ignore it. The B1 is the climate control, and 411 is blower fan: over current or siezed.
The fan is directly behind the glove box. You need to get access to it. It will start running when the key is in pos II, that is the noise you hear.
You might want to pull the cover under the hood, below the windshield, to inspect the fan/filter. If you don't have a filter, get the kit from FCPGroton. Carefully try to get the fan to spin.
It sounds like you might need a new fan and a rehostat to go with it. There is a write up on Volvospeed Bay13 on how to replace the fan.

1 - 4. No idea.
5. The fan you hear is the air pump. It helps the emissions system start working faster after you start the car, much in the same way that blowing on a fire makes it burn hotter. This is normal.

Thanks for the information. Should the air pump be running with the key switched on in the II position, but the motor not running? I don't recall hearing the pump when I have had the hood up, checking engine codes on prior occasions.

I am posting as I was asked too... without being there and hearing it, it would be hard to diagnose, but the passenger side behind the head light near the side is not the air pump...that's under the battery. So, what is it?...I would think it's the A/C compressor. If you're getting blinking lights and the codes you mention, (these are: 4-1-1 Blower fan seized or drawing excessive current, and 1-2-2 Outside temperature sensor open circuit or shorted to 12 volts), I would think that possibly you have a couple of issues. First you need to open the area under the glove box and check the blower fan. I would think it is bad and needs replacing. Tackle that problem first and possibly the other will go away. If not, the connection or circuit to the cooling fan (for engine and other components in the engine well) is shorted open, causing it to run all of the time and that's the fan noise you hear. I believe it is a small fan in front of the radiator...watch out...keep your fingers out of there. There is a relay for this, but I would have to check for where it is. It could be bad, or as mentioned earlier, the seized blower motor could be causing the open circuit, making the car's computer think that this fan needs to be on all of the time when it does not. One question I would ask is if changing the A/C to "off" changes anything at all with the key in II position?...it may not even go to "off" if things are seized open in the circuit but it's worth a try. Try the blower motor first and see if the codes clear, then tackle the cooling fan next if its problem still persists. Good luck and email me if I can help any further.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. I will post the outcome as I try some of the advice I have received. BTW, this is a 1995 850 turbo I am working on. My wife's prior car was a 1996 model.
