My owners manual mentions that the engine cooling fan may run up to 6 minutes after turning engine off. My 1998XC fan (when running) turns off simultaneously with turning off the ignition switch. It will never continue to run even on the hottest summer days. I had no replies on the XC70 forum about this. Anyone have any thoughts on this forum?

Someone posted a similar issue over on swedespeed. He was convinced that his fan was malfunctioning because it went off when the car did. The dealer kept telling him that certain conditions had to be met for his car's fan to keep running and evidently his car had not met those conditions. I believe he was finally able to convince the dealer that something was up and they fixed it. I also believe that his car was a much later model year Volvo. I'm not sure if your fan is suppose to keep running or not. I'm sorry that this hasn't been much help, but I would ask your dealer and do a search over on swedespeed. Good luck.

I have a 98 V70AWD and a 2000 V70XC AWD and the fan on the 98 has always turned off with the ignition while my 2000 keeps runningif running extra warm. My take is that it's normal. Don't worry if your temp is in the normal range.
