P0116 code detected V70-XC70 1998

shows as "Engine Coolant Temp. circuit range/performance problem" Searched the archives with no results.

Cleared the code and car ran very poorly and shut off. Very difficult to restart, then shut off again. When restarting for the second time the code came back but the car would at least run again with the code showing.

I had the same problem with mine. The coolant temp sensor was the problem. They are available aftermarket, but the aftermarket ones are no cheaper than the dealer ones.
Definitely replace the thermostat at the same time.

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Change the thermostat at the same time, it is cost effective to do both. Just drain about a quart of engine coolant and replace both.
An ECT sensor failure will cause the computer to enrich the mixture, fouling the plugs.

I gave you a thumbs up vote on your reply. LOL I totally agree, though I would probably just do the thermostat to begin with. It's easy to open the system up at the thermostat housing to change the sensor too if it has also gone, but the sensor seems to last a good long time on these cars, whereas the thermostat does go after awhile and almost always seems to do this when the weather gets cold.

I re-read my last post here and it really sounded rediculous. There are also other reasons for the code to be set. The temperature sensor is another culprit. How is the temperature registering on your dash? It should be at 3:00 exactly without any deviation once your car warms up (about 10 minutes). The temp. sensor sticks out of the thermostat housing. It could also be the thermostat, which is easy to replace and that's what I would do first if you have low temp on your dash. You can buy a 87degree thermostat (the one that's recommended) for under $10 at www.fcpgroton.com

I would buy one of those little suction like things at an autoparts store (the one with the little balls that float up in it) and check your coolant to see if it's within specs. If you're having really, really cold weather and your coolant is starting to have ice crystals in it due to it not performing up to spec, you could throw that code. Not to mention that if temps drop too far, you could freeze your block and that would mean a new engine...not worth it. I would say that once your coolant is warmed up and you reset the code, you shouldn't have any issue, but I would check your coolant just the same.

Hi MIJ,
I just wanted to know what the "thumbs up/ thumbs down" do, so I gave you a down reply. Hope you don't mind :)

Klaus,
I totally agree...I was half baked when I made my first comment and I was way off base...had forgotten those codes... and then I tried to go back and delete my post but this board wouldn't let me do that. I did re-post and it is much better...you could give me a thumbs up on that one if you want...LOL...don't have any idea in the world what that all means.

Thanks Peter, Klaus & MIJ for the prompt response.

Went out today for parts. Had to go to the dealer as my normal source for BMW & Volvo parts was closed for the holiday.

Drove the car there, came back home, let it cool down for nearly 2 hours. The T40 bolts in the thermostat cover are VERY tight. Will try again in the AM when the car is cold. Looks like the bolt for the PS reservoir must come out too to get to the sensor.

Happy New Year to you guys.

A lot of people have had problems with the T40 torx screws in the thermostat housing. Be careful...I buggered mine all up and had to get replacements from Groton. Anyway, what you want is a 6 inch long T40 torx bit...otherwise you may be able to get the screw out but there is a chance of cross threading it as you won't be able to get straight down on it with the hard fuel lines being in your way. Also, spray some loosener on those screws over night. Have read a post once by a guy who wrenched the top of one of these screws off and was left with the actual screw buried deep in the screw hole. You really don't want to do this if it's really tight. Another tip: Syphon out your expansion tank. This way you have very little spillage when you do get the thermostat housing open, and you can re-use the fluid once everything is back together. You'll have some anyway, and it will smell as it burns off, but you want to make this minimal if possible. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

replaced the sensor and thermostat, however, also had to replace the thermostat housing. The lower base which attachs to the block, not the top. Found a small crack in the base, which leaked coolant when cold.

Back on the road again. Many thanks to Phillip and Bill at Pro Volvo Repair here in Marietta, GA
